DLN ROUNDUP: Carr, Richardson lead West Chester East to OT win in State College
Andrew Carr and Tym Richardson wasted no time finding their scoring touch this season.
The West Chester East boys basketball stars scored 29 and 28 points, respectively, as the Vikings edged North Catholic, 76-68, in overtime at the State College Tip-Off Tournament.
Carr was an astounding 16-for-20 from the foul line, while Richardson drained three 3-pointers to help the Vikings reach the final against host State College, Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
Unionville 67, Pope John Paul 42 >> Sean Neylon led the way with 21 points, including four 3-pointers, and Jon Passarallo added 12 points in the Indians’ win at the Unionville Tip-Off Tournament. Bryce Whitlock added 10 for the Indians, who will face Downingtown East Saturday night.
Phoenixville 73, Kennett 59 >> Buzz Hertz scored 29 points for the Blue Demons, but it wasn’t enough in the nonleague loss to Phoenixville. Ethan Schmidt added 11 and Sam Forte chipped in with eight points in the loss.
Harriton 59, Collegium Charter 51 >> Kamari Miller led Collegium with 20 pointts and Wayne Bailey added 17, but it wasn’t enough in the opening night loss to the Rams.
Octorara 61, Oxford 45 >> Thomas Repetz had 15 points for the Hornets in the loss to their former Ches-Mont League rival at the Octorara Tip-Off Tournament. Christian McCartney and Luke Campbell each added 11 points for Oxford.
WC Rustin 69, Wissahickon 67 >> Griffin Barrouk had 17 points and IV Pettit had 16 as Rustin won its opener at the Montgomery County Community College tournament.
Girls Basketball
Phoenixville 25, Conestoga 23 >> Katharine Gay had 13 points, including six in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough to help the Pioneers in a low-scoring opening night loss. Annie Nikolic and Katie Faith each had four points for Conestoga, while Kat Bielinski added two.
Notre Dame 41, Westtown 29 >> Lex Brooks had 14 points to lead the Moose in the loss.
Boys Swimming
Downingtown West 100, Great Valley 78 >> Brandon Ye (1:54.24) edged out Tommy Boerger (1:54.33) in a tight finish in the 200 freestyle, and also won the 100 butterfly (54.76) and 200 free relay, while Whippet Teammate Steven West won the 50 free (23.16), 100 free (51.19) and 200 free relay as West rolled to a Ches-Mont win on opening night. West and Ye swam on the victorious 200 free relay team with Cole Tuffner and Tanner Peck. Great Valley’s Phillip Zhang had a big night for the Patriots, winning the 200 IM (2:11.90), 100 backstroke (1:01.25) and 400 free relay. Boerger won the 500 freestyle (5:12.94) and swam on winning relays for the Patriots in the 200 medley and 400 free relays. Brett Graff won the 100 breast and 200 medley relay for Great Valley. Downingtown West’s Kurt Campayo won the diving points for the Whippets.
Girls Swimming
Downingtown West 100, Great Valley 74 >> Madizon Mazon won the 50 free (26.35), Rachel Kaczmarski (5:45.37) touched out teammate Katie Toth (5:45.45 in the 500 freestyle, Sydney Martin won the 100 back (55.59) and Chayse Nunciato won the 100 breaststroke (1:19.74) as the Whippets beat Great Valley on opening night. Alyssa Utecht won the 200 freestyle (2:01.26) for the Patriots, while teammate Mac Sullivan (2:18.59) won the 200 IM and 100 fly (59.48).
