Abington goes overtime to beat Souderton
COLMAR >> Frozen at four apiece, Thursday night’s deadlock was broken for good when Abington’s Colin Bruton scored with just 52 seconds left in overtime.
“I was just glad to see that our guys fought hard through all three periods and then certainly in the overtime,” Ghosts coach Ken Brzozowski said. “To come up with that goal was huge for us.”
A team that includes a combined 15 freshmen and sophomores and no seniors, Abington battled its way to a 5-4 overtime victory over rival Souderton at Hatfield Ice.
“This is a character builder for us,” Brzozowski said. “So hopefully we can build a little momentum and see what it does for us as the season goes on.”
Abington led 2-1 after one period thanks to goals by Tom Rourke and Sean Faye.
Joe Stelacio and Griffin Carpenter scored in the second period for the Ghosts to work the lead to 4-2.
But Souderton came back twice, first with goals by Tyler MacPhee and Liam O’Neill to get things to 2-2 in the second, and then in the third, MacPhee completed his hat trick to make it a 4-4 tie.
Until Abington struck late in the three-on-three OT.
“I was very happy with the game out there. It was back and forth, competitive,” Souderton coach Ryan Uchniat said. “I thought both teams skated well and skated hard.
“There was a little bit of a mixup with the change at the end of the game and (Abington) capitalized,” said. “I gotta give it up to that team. They have nine or 10 freshmen on that team and have a good program moving forward.”
Said O’Neill, a captain for Souderton: “In the moment, it stings. But I’m just gonna try and get the guys to use this as fuel.”
