Conestoga’s Morgan Lofland is Main Line Boys Athlete of the Week
The Conestoga High School junior had a standout golf season this fall, finishing first at the PIAA Class AAA East Regional Boys Golf Tournament with a 5-under-par 67 at Golden Oaks Golf Club, then finished ninth at the PIAA Class AAA state championships at Heritage Hills Golf Resort, earning a medal. He is also a standout wrestler for the Pioneers, posting a 32-6 record as a freshman and a 30-12 mark as a sophomore, finishing sixth at Regionals last winter.
Q: You said your 67 at Regionals was your best round of the season. What was working particularly well for you that day?
A: What helped me prevail was my putting and my stellar iron play
Q: What is your most vivid memory of the PIAA state golf tournament?
A: My most vivid memory from the state tournament was when I started off the event with two birdies to grab the lead right away
Q: What part of your game do you consider strongest? What aspect of your game are you working on the most currently?
A: The strongest part of my game right now is my iron play and currently I am working on improving my wedge to make my game come full circle
Q: What is your favorite club and why (can you give specs)? What is your favorite golf ball and why? What size grips do you feel most comfortable with?
A: My most favorite club is my putter, a Studio Select Newport Scotty Cameron. I play Taylormade TP5x golf balls, and I used standard 2 taped golf pride grips.
Q: What golf mentors have been particularly influential to you? What has been the most important thing you have learned from each of them?
A: My main golf influence is my dad, who taught me how to play ever since I was a little kid. Another huge influence of mine is my friend Tim Hornig, a member at Phoenixville Country Club. The most important things I have learned from each of them is that all my hard work and determination pay off.
Q: What is your favorite hole at your home course and why? What is your favorite golf course and why?
A: My favorite hole at Phoenixville Country Club is hole No. 7 – it’s the most difficult hole on the course and I love a challenge. My favorite golf course is Aronimink Golf Club because of the tricky greens and it’s a Pennsylvania-style golf course.
Q: Who is your favorite golfer and why? Is there a golfer whose game you try to pattern your game after?
A: My favorite golfer is Jordan Spieth because of how he gained so much success so quickly in his career. He has inspired me to style parts of my swing like him, like my backswing and my putting stroke.
Q: What do you think you would like to major in at college?
A: Currently I intend on majoring in business in college because I have taken a couple of business classes at Conestoga and I have enjoyed every second of it.
