Behind Toal’s gem, Haverford School advances to PAISAA final
Pat Toal was outstanding on the mound, scattering two hits and three walks against 10 strikeouts in a complete-game gem as Haverford School rolled 10-1 and eliminated rival Episcopal Academy from the quarterfinals of the PAISAA tournament.
The only blemish against Toal was a solo home run by Brian Virbitsky in the third inning. Virbitsky, who worked five innings and was tagged with the loss, had both of EA’s hits.
Calvin Costner homered twice and drove in three runs for Haverford School. Eric Genther drove in three runs, and lead-off man Joe Bonini contributed two RBIs and two runs scored. Jesse Goldman and Luke Kania added two runs and two hits each for the Fords in a game that was tied until Haverford scored four times in the bottom of the fifth and five times in the sixth.
The win sends the Fords to Saturday’s semifinal to take on Malvern Prep. That game will be held at Perkiomen School.
