Main Line wrap-up: Conestoga golfers sweep quad match, Harriton golfers shine
The Conestoga High School golf team swept a quad match at Waynesborough Country Club Tuesday, posting a team score of 186 to beat Ridley (223), Lower Merion (257) and Upper Darby (311). Samantha Yao carded a 35, Morgan Lofland a 36, Kemp Bassett and Will Blatchford shot 38s, and Ben Lee had a 39.
The Harriton golf squad improved its record to 7-1 (5-1 Central League) with a 189-220 win against Penncrest at Springfield Country Club Tuesday. The Rams were led by junior David Fitzgerald (35), junior Andrew Wallace (37), junior Jay Ramaswamy (38), senior Matt Stein (40) and sophomore Niosha Parvizi (40).

Devon Prep defeated Conwell Egan, 245-291, Tuesday at Linfield National. The Tide was led by Ryan McCabe (33), Tyler Kenneson (41), Graham White (41) and Bere Bauers (42).
Haverford School defeated Conestoga, 190-192, at Waynesborough Country Club (par 35) Aug. 30. The Fords’ leading scorers David Hurley (37), AJ Aivaglou (38), Sam Walker (38), Charlie Baker (38), Mac Costin (39). The Pioneers’ leading scorers were Morgan Lofland (37), Kemp Bassett (38), Samantha Yao (38), Connor Loftus (39), Michael Walz (40).
Radnor defeated Garnet Valley, 193-219, Tuesday at St. David’s Golf Club (par 35). Leading the way for the Raiders were David Colleran (37), Jack Hamilton (38), Blake Stephano (38), Davis Flannery (40), Tyler Tornoe (40) and Luke Kelly (40).

Boys’ soccer
Episcopal Academy defeated Charlotte Country Day School (N.C.), 2-1, Tuesday. Samuel Wilson scored a goal, assisted by Harrison Malone; and Alec Austin tallied his first varsity goal, assisted by Gabriel Furey.
Harriton defeated Methacton, 2-1, Aug. 31. In the first half, Harriton’s Alex Kades scored, assisted by Austin Sellhorn. With the score tied 1-1 and two minutes left in regulation, a Methacton player took down Owen Luby in the box, giving Harriton a penalty kick, and Kades converted the PK. The Rams received standout play from goalkeeper Zach Schulman, along with defenders Filip Barun, Robert Fleming and Austin Sellhorn.
Tuesday, the Rams edged West Chester Rustin, 1-0. Harriton junior center midfielder Mikkel Anderson scored the game’s only goal.
Lower Merion opened its season with a 5-0 win over visiting Avon Grove Aug. 31. The Aces went up 1-0 with a goal from sophomore Josh Axelrod, who was able to slot a ball in from Wyatt Joseph, then went ahead 3-0 with two goal from senior Harrison Bloch, assisted by Lincoln Blouin and Ethan Blouin. LM’s Shane Brown scored the Aces’ fourth goal in the first half, assisted by Isaac Brainsky. The fifth goal was scored by senior Cole Sanchez, assisted by Josh Axelrod. In goal for the Aces were Dan Rosen, Andrew Weitz, and Asa Costa, all taking part in the shutout.
Girls’ soccer
Baldwin School defeated Bonner Prendie, 8-0, in its season opener Aug. 31. Senior Natalie Sgro had a hat trick and dished out one assist. Other contributors included Gia Vicari (two assists), Celia Page (one goal), Taylor Levinson (one asssist), Leah White (one assist), Sammy Baron (one goal), Josie Stockett (one goal, one assist), Jane McAleese (one goal, one assist) and Relly Ladner (one goal). Senior Simi Bleznak and sophomore Rani Bleznak combined for two saves in the shutout victory.
Conestoga defeated host Upper Dublin, 3-1, Aug. 31 in riany conditions. Pioneer junior forward Caitlin Donovan scored a hat trick, with assists from Calista Courtney and Nia Scott.
Episcopal Academy defeated Radnor, 4-1, Aug. 31. Anna Salvucci scored a goal and dished out two assists. Raina Kuzemka, Lauren Cunningam and Olivia Dirks also scored for EA.
Lower Merion tied Merion Mercy Academy, 2-2, Aug. 31. Amanda Rosello and Aviva Kosto scored Lower Merion;s goals, while Teresa Hegarty scored two goals for Merion Mercy.
Field hockey
Academy of Notre Dame defeated Penn Manor, 3-2, Aug. 31. Lauren Curran scored two goals, and dished out one assist. Hanna Bodner also scored a goal for Notre Dame, and Jess Schneider had an assist. ND goalie Paige Kieft recorded four saves.
Archbishop Carroll opened its season with a 4-1 win against Springfield Tuesday. Katie LaBella scored twice and Grace ONeill and Mave Riehman added one goal apiece for Carroll. Julia DiRita and Mave Riehman each contributed an assist, and Carroll goalie Mary Kate Kearney had four saves.
Harriton defeated Shipley, 2-0, Tuesday. Nikki Handel and Sydney Odiorne scored goals, and Lily Silbergeld dished out an assist. Center defender Ashton Odiorne made many stops for the Rams. Freshman goalie Grace Dwyer had a fine game, recording three saves.
Merion Mercy Academy tied Haverford High, 1-1, Aug. 31, on a rainy afternoon in a physical battle. Merion got on the score board first off a nice cross ball from Victoria Arra that was tipped in by Grace Lopresti. Merion goalie Kristin Rake recorded six saves.
Girls’ tennis
Episcopal Academy defeated Conestoga, 4-2, Aug. 30. At first singles, EA’s Ashley Kennedy defeated Cassidy Landau 5-2 (ret); at second singles, EA’s Ella Walker defeated Olivia Dodge, 6-0, 6-3; at first doubles, Conestoga’s Leena Kwak and Ananya Krishan defeated Cara Harty and Eliza Aldridge 6-0, 6-0; at second doubles, EA’s Grace Hennigan and Maddie Mitchell defeated Coco Kambayashi and Felicia Manful 6-4, 6-2; at third doubles, Conestoga’s Kate Wieser and Katherine Ginte defeated Natalie Johnston and Parisa Afsharian 6-1, 6-3; and at fourth doubles, EA’s Emily Tiffin and Madisson Hanssens defeated Minju Kim and Abby Frantz 5-7, 6-2, 10-7.
Radnor defeated West Chester East, 7-0, Aug. 29, winning all but one match in straight sets. Winners were Kanon Ciarrocchi (first singles), Lucy Hederick (second singles), Bridget Dougherty (third singles) and the doubles teams of Annie Burton and Zana Moldavsky (first doubles), Grace Frigerio and Jessica Gusdorff (second doubles), Priya Ganesh and Julia Grossinger (third doubles) and Alexandra Moyher and Esther Paik (fourth doubles).
Girls’ volleyball
Lower Merion started its season 2-0 with victories against Academy Park and Kennett in a tri-match Aug. 31. The Aces defeated Academy Park, 3-0, posting scores of 26-16, 25-10, 25-11. Senior Talia Morrris led the offense with nine kills, while sophomore Sofia Taberski posted five. Junior Mika Zapf also contributed six aces. LM also defeated Kennett, 3-0, posting scores of 25-22, 25-21, 25-20. Mika Zapf was all over the stat sheet with eight kills, 11 digs and three aces. Sophomore Sara Beqiraj dished out 18 assists while senior Ellie O’Neill led the defense with 12 digs. Sophomore Jamie Eldridge got thyree of her five kills in Game 3.
Merion Mercy Academy defeated Nazareth Academy, 3-1, Tuesday, posting scores of 20-25, 25-12, 25-16, 25-21. Seniors Nicole Nowlan and Annie Butler led the MMA offense along with junior Ceara Grady. Defensively, senior Amy Ratigan and sophomore Grace Andrews kept the Golden Bears in the game. Freshman Kylie Hopkins and Jess Sack pitched in as well, both in the front and back row.
Water polo
Haverford School (5-0) won three matches at the Phimore Tournament Aug. 31-Sept. 1. In Game 1, the Fords defeated McDnough School, 17-12, led by senior goalie Jason Chen (10 saves, three steals, one block), junior David Gobora (five goals, four blocks) and junior Ryan LaRocca (five goals, six assists, three steals). In Game 2, the Fords defeated Calvery Hall, 21-12, led by junior Ryan LaRocca (nine goals), junior Matej Sekulic (five goals) and freshman Bram Schork (six steals). In Game 3, Haverford School defeated Mount St. Joseph’s, 15-10, led by Matej Sekulic (six goals, four steals) and Ryan LaRocca (three goals, six assists).
Malvern Prep tied Calvert Hall (Md.), 8-8, Aug. 31 in its season opener. Senior captain Brennan Robinson had three goals and three steals in the draw at the PhilMore Cup. Jack Cassidy had two goals and four assists, while Eric Yablonski had two goals and Chris Krein also scored for the Friars. Jake Caulfield had 16 saves in goal.
