D’Ambrosio, Mastropietro have Cougars in mid-season form

Springfield began the 2017-18 season in typical fashion Friday night.

Led by juniors Jordan D’Ambrosio and Belle Mastropietro, the reigning District 1 Class 5A champion Cougars rolled to a 50-23 victory over Upper Merion at the Great Valley Tip-Off tournament.

D’Ambrosio tossed in 15 points and dished out two assists, while Mastropietro finished with nine points, five steals and four assists. The Cougars led 20-8 after the opening quarter.

Alyssa Long had five steals and three assists and Amelia Brooks chipped in with eight points.

At the Quad Tip-Off Challenge:

Penn Wood 57, Bensalem 47 >> Carle Andrews, who led Delaware County in scoring last season, poured in a game-high 25 points with four rebounds, four assists and one steal. The Patriots also received a solid effort from Jada Hunt, who paired nine points with 16 rebounds. Saleia Matthews added nine points, three steals and one assist.

Norristown 55, Upper Darby 46 >> The Royals made things interesting after falling behind 22-4 in the first quarter. Leading the way was Emma Blewett, who netted a game-high 21 points. Sara Sullivan checked in with six points for the Royals.

In the Haverford Hall of Fame tournament:

Haverford 41, Merion Mercy 30 >> Erin Doherty powered the Fords with 14 points and Lindsey Lane netted nine. Elli Keown chipped in with eight.

In the Delco Christian Tip-Off tournament:

Christian Academy 32, Atlantic Christian 25 >> Lindsay Haseltine (11 points) and Dejah Burley-Chambers (10) each scored in double figures for the Crusaders, who held Atlantic Christian to zero points in the second quarter and led at halftime, 24-4.

TCA plays Delco Christian in the championship game Saturday at 3 o’clock.

No details of the Delco Christian game were reported to the Daily Times.

In the Downingtown East Tip-Off tournament:

Bethlehem Catholic 53, Episcopal Academy 44 >> Luca Mamula scored eight of her team-high 16 points in the second quarter for the Churchwomen (1-2). Katie Weaver added 11 points and Seanna McNamara tossed in eight.

At the Abington Ghosts’ Classic:

Abington 73, Notre Dame 57 >> Maggie Pina poured in 21 points in her debut with the Irish. Mandy McGurk posted a double-double with 20 points and 10 assists while also notching four steals.

In nonleague games:

Archbishop Carroll 48, Southern Lehigh 45 >> Molly Masciantonio’s 17-point performance led the way for the Patriots. Erin Sweeney had 16.

Baldwin 39, Sacred Heart 30 >> Eileen Piombino scored seven points and Kaitlin Hughes had six to pace the Lions.

Hun School 55, Agnes Irwin 35 >> Marygrace Miller paced the Owls with 11 points. Paige Brala and Katie Anderson contributed eight points apiece.

Agnes Irwin couldn’t contain Jada Jones, who scored 10 of her game-high 22 points in the fourth quarter.

CB West 65, Chester 28 >> Manija Ash had nine points for the Clippers.
