Amy earns 100th victory, Upper Moreland takes down Wissahickon

UPPER MORELAND >> They came hoping to put themselves in position to be wrestling for a Suburban One League title this weekend

Instead, they left wondering what the heck had just happened.

Wissahicikon’s wrestling team fell to Upper Moreland, 40-25, Wednesday night, and head coach Anthony Stagliano was not smiling.

“I’m not very happy,” said the coach in a classic understatement. “We came in thinking we had a good shot,

“We had two guys out of the lineup, but it shouldn’t have made that big a difference.

“We had guys who got pinned when they were winning and guys who got pinned when they were tied, and we lost a couple of matches by a point.

The Trojans won just two matches that were actually contested (the Bears forfeited three weight classes) and were humbled by a strong Upper Moreland effort.

Wissahickon grabbed the early lead thanks to a Bears forfeit.

But Upper Moreland won the match’s next nine bouts, including a second-period fall by the Bears Amanda Walker at 113 pounds to push the home team into a 16-6 lead, and a forfeit stretched the bulge to 22-6.

Next came some Bears wrestling history when Jason Amy toppled Brayden Druger by technical fall to earn his 100th career victory.

“I’m very happy,” said Amy, whose brother Matt came up short of hitting the century mark before his career ended last season. “I was thinking about it all day. I was nervous and shaking at one point.

I wanted it to be a pin, but I’ll take the tech.”

Up 27-6, the Bears added to their lead with victories by John Richter, Tyler Weimer (by fall) and Tyler Patterson to push their lead to 40-6 before the Trojans Nick Senderling ended the string of losses at nine with a major decision at 160 pounds and Dan Keller hung on to win at 170.
