Mercury-Area Wrestling Roundup: Owen J. Roberts’ Resnick golden at Buckskin Classic

Ryan Resnick is making his senior season even more memorable at every stop.

The Owen J. Roberts senior (14-0) won his second individual tournament of the season Friday, claiming gold in the Buckskin Classic at Conestoga Valley. Resnick ran the table in the 160-pound weight class for the second time in as many tourneys this winter, using a five-point move against Huntingdon’s Seth Baney in the third period to seal a 10-4 win in the finals.

Resnick was dominant on his feet both days, outscoring opponents 62-23 in his four bouts. His latest run started with a 5:32 technical fall of Jersey Shore’s Hunter O’Connor, and it continued with a 21-9 major decision of Red Lion’s Dylan Gurreri. In the semifinals, he posted a 10-4 decision of Dallas’ Steven Newell.

Up 5-3 at the start of the third against Baney, Resnick decided to let him right up and win it where he is strongest.

“I worked all offseason and practiced almost every day and lifted weights every day to take a big step and get ahead of where I was,” Resnick, who recently topped the 100-win mark for his scholastic career, said. “Last year I didn’t get where I wanted to be. This year I’m just attacking every wrestler and pushing the pace and trying to break them. I’m not looking at names, I’m wrestling every kid the same.”

Ryan’s brother, Luke Resnick, finished third at 120 with a five-minute technical fall over Central York’s Logan Paluch. Daniel Mancini (145) also scored a bronze medal with an 11-3 major decision of Central Mountain’s Colton Weaver.

Antonio Petrucelli (132) and Alejandro Acosta (285) came home with seventh-place medals.

Gov. Mifflin >> Isaiah Mayes took the 170-pound title to head Pottstown’s showing at the Gov. Mifflin Tournament.

Mayes’ sweep of the bracket featured a technical fall of Garden Spot’s Travis Fisher at the start, and a 3:11 pin of Penn Manor’s Marquis Sweigart. He won his weight class in a 6-5 decision of Dallastown’s Drake Pew.

Mayes was joined in the medal ranks by Tom Doyle, who placed eighth at 285. Doyle  had a 3-3 record highlighted by falls in all of his victories.

Hatboro-Horsham >> Ryan Finn’s bid for a gold medal at the Ralph Wetzel Holiday Classic fell just short of fruition.

The Pottsgrove senior ended up second in the 182-pound weight class, edged by Central Bucks East’s Collin Stevens in their championship bout. Finn’s 3-1 showing started out with a pair of pins to Central Bucks West’s Spencer Piligian and West Chester East’s Mike Manieri — both in the first period — and a 7-3 decision of Germantown Academy’s Patrick Salmon.

Chase Banyai added a third-place showing at 126, with a 12-4 major decision of Lower Merion’s James Lledo. Skylar McLeod was sixth at 220 edged by Germantown Academy’s Daniel Smith.

P.J. Kakos was Perkiomen Valley’s lone medalist, placing sixth at 106. Stephen Coleman, Paul Pearce, and Gavin Euker each had two wins for the Vikes.

Abingdon Classic >> Upper Perkiomen emerged from its visit to Virginia with a team championship at the 21-school Holiday Hammer tournament.

Jared Kuhns took an individual title at 113, pinning Tennessee’s Rodney Nelson in 5:15; and Zach Rozanski was fourth at 220. Demetrius McIlvaine also reached the 145-pound bracket’s semifinal round before losing.
