Spring-Ford boys and girls sweep Pottsgrove, host Phoenixville

PHOENIXVILLE >> Spring-Ford’s depth in track and field, on both the boys’ and girls’ sides, was clearly evident during a Pioneer Athletic Conference double-dual meet against host Phoenixville and Pottsgrove at Washington Field Wednesday afternoon.

The Rams displayed their clear strength in all running, throwing and jumping events as they swept past the Phantoms and Falcons on a perfect day weather-wise with a lot of sunshine, pleasant temperatures and a limited wind factor.

Among the boys, Spring-Ford defeated Phoenixville, 115-35; and Pottsgrove, 118-32. Phoenixville took the other portion of the meet with a 79.5-69.5 win over Pottsgrove.

On the girls’ side, Spring-Ford posted a 112-38 victory over Phoenixville as well as a 105-45 win over Pottsgrove. Phoenixville won the third leg of the meet with a 78-72 win over Pottsgrove.

Spring-Ford coach Danielle Stauffer and the rest of her staff are so happy with all the Rams have achieved at the start of the 2016 season, and the Rams have done so with a large number of freshmen and sophomore athletes joining the upperclassmen in the scoring column all over the track and field events. The Rams are earning points in areas where they thought they would be questionable, which has already created a lot of pleasant surprises to start the season.

The Spring-Ford boys got a double victory from Tim Rudderow in the discus (145-8) and shot put (48-5). In the sprints, the Rams’ Colin Crosbie was also a double winner in the 100-meter dash (11.69) and 200 (23.44). Zach Smith captured the 1,600-meter run (4:29.59) while Stephen Chapman won the 110 high hurdles (16.49).

Spring-Ford swept the 4×100 (44.85) and 4×400 (3:36.97) relays.

“We are similar to last year,” said Stauffer. “We are strong in mid-distances and distances, the 400 and up in boys and girls,” said Stauffer. “Every week we see somebody new step up. Every week we get some nice surprise.”

So while the Rams graduated some talented athletes in a variety of events, they are still capable of putting a lot of points on the board in a number of those same events because different people have shown the ability to step up from meet to meet.

Bret Aldinger won the javelin with a throw of 143-0 and Tim Uba won the long jump (19-0). Josh Darlington and Chad Smiley tied for first place in the pole vault at 11-0.

Milan Sharma won the 800 (2:05.47). Matt Wechter captured the high jump at 5-8 with newcomer Jahnobi Martin providing a strong third place at 5-4 in the first time ever performing the event.

“Kids are willing to step up,” said Stauffer.

“Everybody PR’d today,” said Spring-Ford assistant coach Brian Sullivan. “The (relays) were clicking today. We scored a ton of points. We have some holes, but overall it was still a good day. We scored a lot of points because of our depth.”

Sullivan was back at the Phoenixville track, where he ran from 1978-81 before venturing into a coaching career at the former St. Pius X High School. The Phantoms also celebrated their Senior Day for track and field in 2016.

Phoenixville’s Sean McGinnis captured the 3,200-meter run in 9:47.70 against both schools. Dylan Smiley anchored the Phantoms’ 4×800 relay to victory in 8:27.63. Smiley also finished first in the 800 against the Falcons in 2:09.28. Andy Tran won the 110 high hurdles in 16.84 against Pottsgrove with Johnavin County taking the 100 (11.79). County swept the triple jump (39-10) against both sides and also claimed the long jump (19-5½) against the Falcons.

Pottsgrove’s Ky’lif Underwood won the 300 hurdles (41.29) and 400 dash (52.22) against both squad.

“We did really good today as a team,” said Underwood. “Guys were stepping up all the time in all the events, especially in the running events on the track, the distances in the 4×8, 4×4 and hurdles.

We all stepped up a notch. Everybody ran hard and ran their best, 100 percent. That’s all you can ask for.”

Phoenixville coach Justin Winters was happy with his squad with a split in team scoring as well as numerous strong individual performances among the boys and girls.

“It was awesome,” said Winters. “Our seniors are incredible. This group of seniors has come through this in a huge transition with coaches leaving. That can go one or two wways. They can buy in or not, and this group has all bought in. I owe this group a lot. They are very special. We are a very young team. This is going to be a good next few years.”

Winters praised the showings he got from the likes of McGinnis, Smiley, William Darcy, Tran, County and basketball star Christian Kelly among the boys and Keri Marini leading the way for the girls. Marini won the 100 hurdles in 16.04 against both schools. Ashlyn Duda finished first in the javelin (96-1) against both schools.

Pottsgrove’s Diana Randleman won the 100 dash (13.23), 200 (27.26) and long jump (15-7) against both foes. G’Ivonah Mitchell won the discus (110-7) and shot put (31-3½) against both teams. Miazziah Rose won the high jump (5-1) and triple jump (33-6) against the Phantoms.

Spring-Ford’s Bella Marchini won the 1,600 (5:27.52) and Aleigha Johnson finished on top in the triple jump (37-2) against both teams. The Rams’ Samantha Watkin won the long jump (15-6) against Phoenixville. Nandini Patel won the 400 (62.02) against both sides.
