Berks football at a glance: Week 1

Section 1 teams

Susquehanna Twp 42, Conrad Weiser 17: Alonzo Rivera caught three touchdowns pass from Ben Moser, as the Indians scored three first quarter TDs to put away the Scouts in Robesonia. Moser completed 22 of 31 passes for 357 yard four scores, with one interception. Rivera caught nine balls for 115 yards. Zach Mowrer had 72 yards on two totes and a TD for Weiser.

Wilson 14, Governor Mifflin 3: Shane Dantzler and Bailey McElroy each found the end zone for Wilson in a defensive struggle at Shillington. McElroy’s fourth-quarter score was enough to hold off the Mustangs. Collin Powers completed 12 of 19 passes for 112 yards for the Bulldogs. Hunter Reeser’s 87 yards on 16 rushes paced Mifflin, which could only manage a 35-yard field goal from Ben Myers in the second quarter.

Daniel Boone 7, Cocalico 0: Nick Hughes’s third-quarter touchdown proved to be the only score of the contest, at Birdsboro. Hughes rushed for 125 yards on 16 carries. Cocalico’s Hunter High picked up 109 on 22 totes.

Reading 36, York 0: KJ Boston picked off two Bearcat passes and threw for one (to Kaury Mauras) as the Red Knights rolled in York. Austin Jackson’s 53-yard fumble return for a score was the highlight of a 5-TO performance by the Knights’ defense.

 

Section 2 teams

Hamburg 30, Elco 8: Ignasio Reynoso scored four touchdowns as part of his 117-yard night on the ground to lead the Hawks to an easy victory over the Raiders in Myerstown.

Garden Spot 47, Twin Valley 0: Garden Spot hung 33 first-half points on the Raiders at Elverson to cruise to the victory. Jahad Jeffers rushed for 152 yards on 16 carries and scored three touchdowns to lead the Spartans’ attack. Cameron Roth was a tidy 10 of 13 for 227 and a TD pass. Alec Ranck threw for 201 yards and a score for Twin Valley but was picked four times.

Fleetwood 46, Octorara 41: The Tigers survived a wild one at home, blowing a 25-7 lead after one before rallying with the final score of the game on a 33-yard strike to Tyler Strunk from Luke Emge. Fleetwood rolled up 557 yards of offense — paced by Sampson Lerch’s eye-popping 265 rushing yards on just nine carries — a 29.4 average. He scored three times.

Susquenita 7, Schuylkill Valley 0: The Blackhawks snapped a 15-game losing streak dating to 2013 by nipping the Panthers in Duncannon. Kevin Kenny’s 84-yard kickoff return to open the second half proved to be the only score of the game.

 

Berks League crossovers

Wyomissing 35, Pottsville 7: Christian Martir ran for two scores and caught two more to lead the Spartans over the Crimson Tide in Pottsville. Martir rushed for 134 yards on nine carries.

Berks Catholic 50, Muhlenberg 0: The defending Section 2 champs got off the a flying start with a home trouncing of the Muhls. Berks Catholic scored five TDs within the first nine minutes to grab a commanding 36-0 lead after one. Isaac Lutz had three rushing touchdowns for the Saints.
