Governor Mifflin tops Saints to win Berks League crown
With a 24-point fourth quarter, the Governor Mifflin High School girls basketball team defeated Berks Catholic in the Berks County League’s championship game on Feb. 13 at Santander Arena in Reading, 67-53. It was the Mustangs’ 10th league title, and their first since 2011.
Kylie Herman was the hero of the game for the Mustangs, scoring a career-high 26 points. Jennifer Martin helped the cause with 15 points and Kyra Hartman scored 10.
It was Berks Catholic with the lead after one quarter, 14-13, but Mifflin came back to take a 25-21 halftime lead, and expanded the advantage to seven after three quarters. Instead of just protecting a lead, the Mustangs put the foot on the pedal and scored 24 fourth quarter points to win the game going away.
Governor Mifflin didn’t have much time to recoup, as it took on Exeter the next night in the opening round of the District 3-AAAA playoffs. This time it was Exeter that had a big fourth quarter, outscoring Mifflin, 19-4, and won the game, 42-33. The loss ended the Lady Mustangs’ season with an overall record of 19-7.
Melissa Martin was the high scorer for the Mustangs with 11 points, while Jennifer Martin scored 10 and Herman netted eight.
The Lady Mustangs began the Berks League playoffs with a game against Exeter at Muhlenberg High School. A strong first half helped the Mustangs come away with a 39-29 victory. Mifflin took a 10-5 lead into the second period, then expanded the lead to nine by halftime, 18-9. Exeter was unable to pull off the second half comeback.
Jennifer Martin led the Governor Mifflin offense with 13 points in the contest. Emonie Reviere scored 11 points while Kylie Herman netted six and Melissa Martin had five.
The victory sent the Lady Mustangs to the semifinal round where they took on another Division 1 opponent in Daniel Boone. Governor Mifflin started strong and never let up as the Mustangs won the game, 56-35.
Mifflin jumped out to an 11-6 lead after one quarter, then increased the lead to 10 by halftime, 26-16. They put the game away in the third quarter, outscoring the Blazers, 12-6.
Kyra Hartman was the high scorer for Governor Mifflin with 18 points in the game. Melissa Martin canned 17 points while Jennifer Martin scored six and Herman added five.
