Second season begins with league tournaments

Can Radnor’s Tom Meyers and Upper Darby’s Josh Yeboah-Gyasi stay undefeated? Will Chichester maintain its momentum following its first Del Val League title in 12 years? And can Sun Valley’s Steve Okoorian and Alex Elliott repeat as champions?

Those are just a few of the questions that will be answered in the various league wrestling tournaments that will take place Saturday.

Meyers (29-0) and Yeboah-Gyasi (22-0) put their undefeated records on the line in the Central League championships at Harriton High School. Wrestling begins at 10 a.m. and the start of the championship, third-place and fifth-place bouts has been moved up to 5:30 because of potential for snow.

Meyers, the top seed at 170 pounds, is going for his second straight league title Yeboah Gyasi won the 220-pound crown in 2013. Strath Haven’s Justin Fremont, Liam Frank of Penncrest and Gary Pizzuto from Garnet Valley are vying for their third straight league titles. The top six wrestlers advance to the District One Class AAA West Tournament at Spring-Ford.

In the Del Val League, Chichester has four returning champions in Craig Baldwin, Chris Smarkola, Tom Smarkola and Eddie Sykes. Eric Thomas of Interboro is going for his third straight league crown. The tournament is at Academy Park and begins at 9:30 a.m. with the championships set for noon. The top three wrestlers move on to the District One Class AAA East Tournament at Interboro.

In the Chest-Mont League, Elliott is the top seed at 160 pounds and Okoorian, who recently went over the 100-win mark in his career, is No. 1 at 170 pounds. Wrestling begins at 9 a.m. The top seven wrestlers advance to the District One Class AAA Central Tournament at Wissahickon.

The District 12 Class AAA Catholic League tournament is at Archbishop Ryan High School, while the Bicentennial League tournament is at New Hope-Solebury.
