Main Line wrapup: Notre Dame, Baldwin capture volleyball tourney titles

Academy of Notre Dame won the Spiketacular Volleyball Tournament held at Cherokee High School in Marlton, N.J. Sept. 22. As the only Pennsylvania school competing against 11 New Jersey high school teams, the Irish compiled a 12-0 record, including its defeat of Cherry Hill East in the semi-finals and Gloucester County Institute of Technology in the finals. Leading the offense for Notre Dame was Riley Shaak with 68 kills throughout the tournament, while Maddie Donaphon anchored the defense with 83 digs.
Baldwin School’s volleyball team finished first at the Academy of New Church Invitational Sept. 22. In the preliminary rounds, the Polar Bears earned the No. 1 seed, then defeated MaST in the semifinals, 25-16, 25-23; then in the finals defeated The Perkiomen School 25-16, 22-25, 15-13. Key contributors included Cartier Thomas (19 aces, 62 assists); Georgia Dahm (20 kills, six aces, three blocks); Tessa Pearlstein (30 kills, four aces, six blocks); Makayla Pratt (29 kills, six blocks); Laura Pellicano (14 kills, 12 aces, 11 digs); Elise Kait (14 aces, seven digs); and Taylor Trapp (seven aces, 33 digs).

Boys’ soccer
Devon Prep defeated Lansdale Catholic, 2-0, Sept. 21, getting goals from Nick Bello and George Kweder. Tide goalkeeper Luke Grycewicz recorded his second shutout in Catholic League play for Devon Prep (5-3, 4-2).
Episcopal Academy (7-0-1) got a hat trick from Samuel Wilson (his second of the season) in a 3-1 win against Hill School Sept. 22. Assists were dished out by Xander Lotsis and Jack Pacera. Trevor Manion recorded seven saves.
EA defeated Lawrenceville School, 2-0, Sept. 20. Nate Hunter scored, assisted by Harrison Malone, and Samuel Wilson scored, assisted by Brendan De Pillis. EA goalie Trevor Manion recorded eight saves.
Friends’ Central defeated Abington Friends School, 1-0, Sept. 21 behind a penalty kick in the 71st minute from Carson Lonner. FCS goalie Sam Pendrak saw little action due to the tough Phoenix defense and made one save.

Girls’ soccer
Baldwin School (5-0-1) defeated Agnes Irwin, 4-0, Sept. 21. Senior forward and Georgetown commit Gia Vicari scored two goals and had two assists. Senior midfielder Natalie Sgro and senior midfielder Relly Ladner each had a goal apiece. Simi and Rani Bleznak combined to record six saves in net for the team’s sixth straight shutout.
The Pola Bears defeated Delco Christian, 8-0, Sept. 20, for its fifth straight shutout. Gia Vicari had a hat trick and dished out an assist, and other Polar Bear contributors included Ssmmy Baron (two goals), Natalie Sgro (one goal, one assist), Relly Ladner (one goal, two assists) and Celia Page (one goal, one assist). Goalkeepers Simi and Rani Bleznak made two saves for the shutout.
Conestoga (6-1-1, 4-0) knocked the Panthers from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 3-1 win Sept. 20. Emily Wertz and Calista Courtney gave ’Stoga a 2-0 lead at the half, and Nia Scott added an insurance goal for Conestoga.
Friends’ Central tied Perkiomen School, 1-1, Sept. 21, getting a goal from Izzy MacFarlane and an assist from Juliana Aiken. The Phoenix outshot Perkiomen 30-1.
Merion Mercy Academy defeated Academy of Notre Dame, 4-0, Sept. 21. Teresa Hegarty scored two goals and Mary Kate Lopresti and Caitlin Spillane tallied one each. Goalie Caroline Sack had seven saves.
Two days earlier, the Golden Bears defeated Upper Darby, 10-2, getting goals from 10 different players – Kate Stricker, Caitlin Spillane, Alexa Hofmann, Jackie Roberts, Teresa Hegarty, Mary Kate Lopresti, Ainsleigh Reichow, Victoria Steinmetz, Zoie Dodd and Montana McCrea,

Field hockey
Academy of Notre Dame (7-0-1) defeated Conestoga, 3-1, Sept. 21, getting a hat trick from Lauren Curran. Mia Leonhardt assisted on two of the goals, Vivi Trumpbour on the other. ND goalie Paige Kieft recorded two saves.
ND head coach Adele Williams said, “Our midfield took control in the second half, breaking down plays and through quick transition were able to score their second and third goals. It was a good team effort.”
Agnes Irwin (3-2, 1-1) defeated Penn Charter, 7-1, Tuesday, getting four goals from Emma van der Veen, two goals from Marissa White and one goal from Ariana Karalis. Assists were dished out by Emma van der Veen, Kacy Hogarth, Lily Botta, Ariana Karalis and Ashby Evans.
The Owls lost to Merion Mercy, 2-0, Monday. AIS goalie Paige DiLullo recorded 16 saves, and Ciaran Scott played tough defense for the Owls.
Archbishop Carroll (8-0, 5-0) defeated Little Flower, 10-0, Monday. Katlie LaBella, Maeve Riehman, Megan Curray and Alex Almonte scored two goals each, and Keri Daly dished out a pair of assists. Goalie Mary Kate Kearney recorded five saves and a shutout.
The Patriots defeated Cardinal O’Hara, 1-0, in overtime Sept. 21, with the game-winner coming from Katie LaBella about five minutes into overtime, assisted by Maeve Riehman. Carroll goalie Mary Kate Kearney recorded nine saves and a shutout.
Conestoga lost to nationally-ranked Academy of Notre, 3-1, Sept. 21. The Pioneers were tied at halftime, 1-1, thanks to a goal from Charlotte deVries on a penalty corner. Maddy Todd and Katie Clemson split time in the net for Conestoga and registered a combined four saves
The Pioneers defeated Strath Haven, 6-0, Sept. 20, thanks to a 19-0 shots on goal edge. Charlotte de Vries scored three times and added an assist for ’Stoga.
Episcopal Academy (3-0-2) edged Hill School, 3-2, Sept. 22. Maddie Rehak scored two goals, Kelly Smith tallied one, and Gianna Pantaleo and Kathleen Anderson each dished out an assist. Lauren Devletian and Sofia Acosta each had a defensive save, and goalies Caroline Kelly and Gianna Cilluffo combined for nine saves. EA head coach Gina Buggy said, “It was an outstanding field hockey game which featured great passing combinations from both teams and great scoring opportunities. I was thrilled to see that we finally capitalized on those opportunities. I thought the defense did a great job warding off their corners, which are threatening.”
One day earlier, EA defeated Penn Charter, 6-0, getting a hat trick from Annie Rau, two goals from Maddie Rehak and one goal from Sofia Acosta. Each of them also had one assist, and Gianna Pantaleo dished out two assists.
Lower Merion edged Marple Newtown, 1-0, Sept. 20, in overtime. Milli Vera’s goal from Olivia Ruth got the Aces on the board.
Sacred Heart downed St. Basil Academy, 3-1, Sept. 20 to earn its first Catholic Academies League win of the season. Mary Lauren Franz, Danielle Santora and Sydney Bell all tallied one goal apiece while Liz Franz and Julia Flood each had an assist. Goalkeeper Gigi Backe had three saves for Sacred Heart (3-4, 1-4).

Girls’ tennis
Academy of Notre Dame (3-1) defeated Cardinal O’Hara, 6-1, Monday, winning all of the matches except second singles. All seven matches were decided in straight sets. At first singles, McKenna Bramlage won 6-1, 6-0; and at third singles, Grace Rivers won 6-0, 6-0.
The Irish defeated Springside Chestnut Hill, 7-0, Sept. 20. Singles winners were McKenna Bramlage (first singles), Ally Dugan (second singles) and Grace Rivers (third singles).
Baldwin School (2-0) defeated Agnes Irwin, 6-1, Sept. 21, winning all matches exceot fourth doubles. Torrie Smith won 7-6 (5), 6-4 at first singles, Izzy Antanavicius won 6-0, 6-0 at second singles and Presley Daggett won 6-1, 6-0 at third singles. Alexis Shatzman and Alexa Diecidue won 6-2, 6-2 at first doubles, Teagan Krane and Hana Ahanger won 6-4, 6-3 at second doubles while Grace Lavin and Devon Shatzman won 6-0, 6-2 at third doubles.
Barrack Hebrew Academy lost to Perkiomen, 4-1, Sept. 20. The Cougars’ second doubles duo of Anita Hoffman and Sophie Levin were victorious.
Episcopal Academy (7-0) defeated Hill School, 4-1, Sept. 22. EA won first singles (Ashley Kennedy defeated Elana Zhang 2-6, 6-3, 6-1) and second singles (Bella Calastri defeated Joyce Sun 6-0, 6-1), and swept the doubles matches – at first doubles, Cara Harty/Eliza Aldridge defeated Netasha Kamuria/Amanda Sprague 6-2, 6-1, and at second doubles Caroline Burt/Grace Hennigan defeated Carla Canales/Haley Wisniewski 6-1, 6-0.
Two days earlier, EA defeated Lawrenceville Academy, 5-2, Sept. 20, sweeping the singles matches with Ashley Kennedy (first singles), Ella Walker (second) and Bella Calastri (third) emerging victorious.
Harriton (7-0) defeated Springfield, 7-0, Monday, getting singles win from Saige Roshkoff, Shaina Ginsberg and Erika Lutz, and doubles victories from Connie Richards/Mackenzie Sherman, Roshni Parikh/Lauren Binnion, Jolie Smith/Cierra Anderson and Dani DeBotton/Claudia Combert.
The Rams defeated Strath Haven, 7-0, Sept. 21. Singles winners were Saige Roshkoff, Nina Hoog and Mackenzie Sherman; doubles winners were Erika Lutz/Shaina Ginsberg, Lauren Binnion /Roshni Parikh, Josephine Kwok/Allison Liao and Abby Steinberg/Cierra Anderson.
Merion Mercy Academy (5-4) lost to Gwnedd Mercy, 3-2, Monday, getting straight set victories at first singles (Chloe Abramowitz) and second singles (Nina Dzidic).
MMA had two of the top three finishers at the AACA singles tournament Sept. 20. Sophomore Chloe Abramowitz finished second, and senior Nina Dzidic placed third.
The Golden Bears defeated St. Basils, 5-0, Sept. 19, led by straight set wins in singles matches by Nina Dzidic (second singles) and Maddie Urbano (third singles).
Radnor swept Lower Merion, 7-0, Monday, winning five matches in straight sets. Singles winners were Kanon Ciarrocchi, Lucy Hederick and Bridget Dougherty; doubles winners were Annie Burton/Caroline Egg-Krings, Grace Frigerio/Jessica Gusdorff, Priya Ganesh/Julia Grossinger and Zana Moldavsky/Alexandra Moyher.
The Raiders defeated Marple Newtown, 7-0, Sept. 21, winning all matches in straight sets. Kanon Ciarrocchi (first singles) won 6-0, 6-0, Bridget Dougherty (second singles) won 6-0, 6-0, and Zana Moldavsky (third singles) won 6-0, 6-1.
One day earlier, the Raiders defeated Penncrest, 7-0, again winning all seven matches in straight sets. Kanon Ciarrocchi (first singles) and Lucy Hederick (second singles) won 6-0, 6-0, and Bridget Dougherty (third singles) won 6-0, 6-1.
Shipley (4-0) defeated Germantown Friends, 3-2, Sept. 21. The Gators got wins at first singles (Tori Allen), second singles (Phoebe Fry) and the first doubles team of Audrey Fink and Isabella Scardapane.

Girls’ volleyball
Academy of Notre Dame defeated Baldwin School 3-0 Sept. 21 (posting scores of 25-13, 25-10, 25-17) to open its defense of the Inter-Ac championship. Gracie Guerin played a strong all around match with eight kills, five blocks and four aces. Maddie Donaphon and Ciara Gibbs combined for 16 digs. Lexi Shreinerner opened the second set with a 13 point service run to key the victory.
The Irish earned a 3-0 sweep of host Lower Merion Sept. 20. Christine Covello dished out 23 assists while contributing four blocks. Maddie Donaphon and Grace Clark combined for 17 digs.
Agnes Irwin defeated Germantown Academy, 3-2, Sept. 21, completing a comeback after losing the first two sets. The match came down to the wire with senior Caitlyn Yoh securing the momentum – while serving in the fifth set down 13-11 she sparked the Owls to a 15-13 win. The team was led by senior captain Lauren Karlson with 28 assists and junior Mara Zwilling with 13 kills. The Owls defense was led by Avery Seibert and Colby Yoh with six blocks apiece, and freshman Jenna Zwilling with 25 digs.
Merion Mercy Academy defeated host Villa Joe, 3-1, Tuesday, posting scores of 27-25, 27-25, 23-25, 25-16. The Golden Bears were led by freshman Monica Merenda (30 assists), senior Amy Ratigan (31 digs), senior Annie Butler (19 kills, 15 digs) and senior Nicole Nowlan (12 kills, four aces).
Radnor (3-6, 2-3) snapped a four-game losing streak with a 3-2 win against Haverford Monday, posting scores of 21-25, 25-18, 17-25, 25-23 and 15-13. The Raiders trailed by 10 points in the fourth set but the team rallied behind powerful kills and deft touch shots from senior outside Grace Henderson (12 kills, one block, one ace) and clutch serving from junior DS Grace Remphrey. The back-and-forth continued in the rubber set, with Radnor, trailing 11-13, rallying to take the next four points for the win. Sophomore outside Lucy Criscuolo tallied seven kills including three in the final frame. Senior setter Erica DiCarlo set the offense in motion with 24 assists and also had three kills, 12 digs, and two aces. The defense was led by senior libero Sammy Scannapieco with 19 digs and senior middle Izzy Criscuolo with four blocks, three kills and two aces. Other standouts including sophomore setter Josie Darrach with three kills, two blocks and five assists.

Cross country
Haverford School placed fourth at the Penncrest Invitational Sept. 22. Ford sophomore AJ Sandford finished seventh with a time of 17:35.
Malvern Prep defeated Episcopal Academy, 19-39, Sept. 20. The Friars had five of the top seven finishers in Inter-Ac action. Zach Brill (17:02) finished first and teammates Collin Hess and Drew Brill followed for Malvern. For the Chrchmen, Owen Maier came in fourth and Carson Fischer placed fifth.
Radnor (boys) defeated Conestoga 27-32 and lost to Penncrest 27-32 in a tri-meet Sept. 20. Radnor’s Ethan Zeh won the race with a clocking of 17:28, while the Raiders’ Doug Rosin (second) and Frank Brown (fifth) were top 10 finishers.

Girls’ volleyball
Baldwin School defeated the Agnes Irwin, 3-2, Tuesday, posting scores of 25-23, 27-29, 25-19, 21-25 and 15-13. The Polar Bears rallied back from a 9-5 deficit to claim the Inter-Ac victory. Leading Baldwin was Cartier Thomas (36 assists), Georgia Dahm (nine kills, two blocks), Tessa Pearlstein (10 kills, eight blocks), Anajah Brown (11 kills, five blocks), Laura Pellicano (nine kills, eight digs, three aces), Makayla Pratt (seven kills, three blocks), Elise Kait (10 digs, three aces) and Taylor Trapp (13 digs).
Villa Maria Academy defeated Unionville, 3-2, Sept. 21, posting scores of 23-25, 25-22, 25-22, 19-25, 15-11. The Hurricanes were led by Lizzie Acchione (13 kills), Kelsey Hoff (41 assists, nine kills) and Alivia Orvieto (16 digs).

Golf
Devon Prep defeated Bishop Shanahan, 237-306, Sept. 21 at Walnut Lane. For the Tide, Ryan McCabe shot a 38, and a trio of Devon Prep golfers shot 39 – Bere Bauers, Coleman Miller and Aidan Cosgrove.
One day earlier, the Tide defeated Archbishop Wood, 229-251, at Linfield National. The Tide were led by Ryan McCabe (36), Tyler Kenneson (36) and Bere Bauers (37).

Water polo
Episcopal Academy (girls) defeated Hill School, 18-10, Sept. 22. Leading the way for EA was sophomore Jovana Sekulic (four goals, five steals, three assists, three kick outs drawn) and senior co-captain Allison Lee (two goals, three assists, four steals).
Malvern Prep (2-4-1) lost to LaSalle, 11-9, Monday. Jake Caulfield was again stellar in goal with 22 saves for the Friars. Jack Cassidy led the Friars with three goals and three assists, Ryan Cochran and Gavin Kane had a pair of goals and Brennan Robinson had a goal and three assists. Dan Ward also scored for Malvern.
The Friars defeated Friends’ Central, 12-5, Sept. 20. Malvern Prep boasted eight different scorers and goaltender Jake Caufield made 16 saves to lead Malvern. Jack Cassidy had three goals, five assists and six steals. Dan Ward and Erik Yablonski each had two goals for the Friars.
