The Flyers Cup was inaugurated in the late 1970s, the brainchild of a Flyers organization that was then just a decade old and looking to grow the grassroots support behind its two legendary Stanley Cup runs. The first Flyers Cup was played in the winter of 1980, with Archbishop Carroll lifting the inaugural Class AAA crown.

Since then, the structure of hockey in the Commonwealth has been formalized under the Flyers Cup in the eastern half of the state and the Penguins Cup in Western Pennsylvania, with the champions of each meeting annually. Delaware County schools have lifted the state championship on seven occasions, with nine schools winning 27 Flyers Cups across the three boys classifications and the girls division.
