Main Line roundup: Lower Merion boys’ soccer team earns back-to-back shutouts

The Lower Merion High School boys’ soccer team earned back-to-back 4-0 victories against Central League rivals Springfield and Garnet Valley, improving its record to 6-1-1 and a No. 5 ranking in the PIAA District 1 4A boys’ soccer rankings as of Sept. 16.

Against Garnet Valley Sept. 10, the only goal in the first half was scored by senior Kody Raizen, assisted by Sam Potts-Drew.  In the second half, goals were scored by junior Carson Cox (assisted by senior Marcello Froio), Potts-Drew (assisted by freshman Danny Orova) and senior Charlie Gittleman (assisted by Cox).

Two days later against Springfield, the Aces got two goals from

Senior Becket Field (assisted by Froio), and one goal each from Raizen (assisted by Field) and Potts-Drew (assisted by junior Kai Kushner).  Clean sheets in the games were by goalies Kent Kandemir and Sam McNeary.  Strong defensive play was contributed by center back sophomores Ben Bradway and Nathan Cante and sophomore center midfielder Caden Arnold.

In other Main Line high school boys’ soccer action:

Episcopal Academy defeated Shipley, 2-1, Sept. 10. Michael McGonagle and Garrett Rhoades scored for EA, and Balthizar Buccini dished out two assists. Luke Adams scored for Shipley.

Girls’ soccer

Episcopal Academy defeated Pennington, 2-1, Sept. 10. For the Churchwomen (4-0), Avery Me and Bridget Dempsey scored, with assists from Quinn Whitaker and Sofia Gagliardi. As of Sept. 10, Pennington was ranked No. 6 in Region III.

Three days later, EA defeated Hill School, 8-0. Goals were scored by Bridget Dempsey, Quinn Whitaker (two), Caroline Johnston, Addie Chang, Ava Cavanaugh, Devon Stewart and Maya Raman as the Churchwomen improved to 5-0.

Agnes Irwin earned a 4-3 win against host Mercy High School (Md.) Goals were scored by freshmen Olivia Rife, Dylan Ohm and Carly Barnes, with the game-winner coming from 8th-grader Hope Chang.

 

Field hockey

Academy of Notre Dame defeated Penn Charter, 9-0, Sept. 10. Maura Seeger had a hat trick and Maeve McGinley scored two goals.

On day later, the Irish defeated West Essex (N.J.), 3-1. Reese Milone, Kiera Sack and Lexy Patton scored goals and ND goalie Avery Ruggerio recorded three saves.

Agnes Irwin defeated Archbishop Carroll, 6-0, Sept. 10. Catie Holmes scored two goals, and Caroline Chisholm scored one goal and dished out two assists.

Two days later, the Owls defeated Penn Charter, 10-2. Gabby Lee had a hat trick, and Chisholm and Grace Connelly each scored two goals.

 

Football

Episcopal Academy junior quarterback Brody Garrison threw four touchdown passes in the second quarter to lead the Churchmen (1-2) to a 47-14 victory over Hill School Sept. 13. Garrison completed 14 of 16 passes for 274 yards. Jackson Orcutt caught two of the touchdown passes, while Jay Barrett and Jahmir Brown each added one. Garrison also scored on a 25-yard run. Orcutt finished with eight catches for 191 yards and Brown snagged three balls for 44 yards.

 

Girls’ tennis

Episcopal Academy defeated Hill School, 7-0, Sept. 13, winning all seven matches in straight sets. Avery Morris, Gwen Morris and Carter Yearley won the singles matches.

Friends’ Central defeated Academy of the New Church, 5-0, Sept. 10. Singles winners were Karishma Satti, Margot Groundwater and Maddy Jackson.

Episcopal Academy defeated Penn Charter, 7-0, Sept. 10, winning all seven matches in straight sets. Singles winners were Avery Morris, Gwen Morris and Carter Yearley.

 

Cross country

Academy of Notre Dame defeated Episcopal Academy 26-29

and Springside Chestnut Hill 23-38 in a tri-meet Sept. 10. For the Irish, Mary Rossano placed second with a time of 21:14.

Episcopal Academy defeated Springside Chestnut Hill 23-38 and lost to Academy of Notre Dame 26-29 in a tri-meet Sept. 10. For the Churchwomen, Kendra Williamson finished first on the Episcopal Academy course with a clocking of 19:36, which is a course record for EA girls.

 

Girls’ volleyball

Agnes Irwin lost to Harriton, 3-1, Sept. 13, posting scores of 16-25, 21-25, 25-17, 21-25). The Owls were led by sophomore Raelyn Zielke (eight aces, seven kills), senior Priya Johnson (five aces, six blocks, 17 assists) and sophomore middle Audrey Comley (seven blocks).

 

Water polo

Malvern Prep competed in the prestigious Battle of the Beltway at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. Sept. 14-15 and won one of five contests, defeating Gonzaga (D. C.) by a 9-7 score. The Friars were led by Connor Treston (seven goals, four assists, seven steals), Drew Geibel (10 goals, two assists, five steals), Jacob Nowoswiat (seven goals in three games), Jonathon Richardson (five goals, two steals) and Luke McGovern (three goals, seven assists, three steals).
