Coach of the Year
Dave Schultz, Downingtown West
Yes, Downingtown West had a superstar in Ava Thomas, but there was talent up and down the lineup and the man behind the bench made it all come together and had them peaking at the right time.
The Whippets came away with their second Flyers Cup title in three years and Schultz is the Daily Local News Girls Ice Hockey All -Area Coach of the Year.
“It’s a year-long process,” said Schults. “Every time we step on the ice, it’s about getting them better so they can compete. You can have good players, but you have to develop them also.”
West finished in the middle of the pack as injuries and Thomas’ national team duties hampered them during the regular season. But, they sizzled during the playoffs.
They rolled through the Flyers, beating their three opponents by a combined 39-14 margin.
It culminated in a 13-8 win over Avon Grove in the championship as Thomas scored an incredible nine goals.
“It’s a great accomplishment,” said Schultz after the game. “These girls played their hearts out. Half this team won it two years ago and now, it’s a new group of Downingtown West girls to have their names on the Cup.”
And the scary part for the rest of the league is that they are young. Defenseman Maddison Vitali and Thomas will be juniors and high-scoring freshman Chole Bogusch, who missed the Flyers Cup, will be a sophomore.
