DLN Roundup: Cougars hurler Schumann sets strikeout milestones in victory

Downingtown East pitcher Rachael Schumann surrendered only three hits and struck out 20 batters to power the Cougars to a 6-0 shutout softball victory against Unionville on Wednesday. It helped Schumman surpass the 200-strikeout milestone for the season, and the 400 plateau for her high school career. Schumann was also one of four East players to notch multiple hits, including Hailey Long, Jade Jenkins and Lilly Waterer.

Oxford 14, Avon Grove 0 (5 innings) >> Starter Cece Figueroa went the distance and scattered four hits for the Hornets. McKenna Frank had three hits and three RBI, and Molly Friel drove in three runs to pace Oxford.

Coatesville 5, West Chester Rustin 4 >> The Red Raiders edged the Knights behind a strong outing in the circle from Ashlynn Sherman, who allowed only one earned run and helped herself with two hits and two RBI. She was backed by three double plays by the Coatesville defense. Caitlyn Reynolds added an RBI single for the Raiders. Gianna Lupo had two hits, including a double, for Rustin.

Avon Grove 5, Oxford 1 >> The Devils jumped out to a 5-0 lead through three innings and went on to top the Hornets in Ches-Mont action. Pitcher Grady O’Rourke allowed one run and six hits, and fanned seven, on his way to complete-game win. Brothers Trevor and Trent Dosenbach each had two hits to pace Avon Grove.

Girls Lacrosse

Penn Charter 13, Bishop Shanahan 8 >> The Eagles fell behind 9-2 at the half and went on to fall in non-league action. Silvia Baptista led the way with three goals, while teammate Gilliam Greco added two goals. Amelia Benner and Elise Pezone each chipped in single goals for Shanahan.

Immaculata 15, Neumann 1 >> In the opening round of the Atlantic East Conference Tournament, top-seeded Immaculata cruised to the home victory over the Knights. Starting pitcher Jason Hughes got the win (9-1 overall) by going six innings, allowing no hits and striking out eight batters. The Mighty Macs bashed out at total of 19 hits, including four each by Joey Sacco and Ryan Struble. And Josh Crowding drove in five runs for Immaculata (27-11 overall).
