Pennridge offense in high gear in win over Souderton
EAST ROCKHILL >> Best friends on and off the field, Pennridge’s Kate Unzicker and Ava Fantaskey keep finding each other.
“We play together all the time. We play on club together too,” said Fantaskey with a smile. “It was clicking. Even on the draw, Kate placed it really well so I was able to get it. We all just worked together so well.”
“I think our attack just really came out and we really worked well together,” Unzicker said. “We were working together as a team, hitting the open cuts, and we weren’t being selfish — we were really playing together.”
Unzicker and Fantaskey led a terrific offensive performance for the Rams Wednesday night, as they raced to an 18-9 victory over Souderton in a Suburban One League National Conference game at Helman Field.
The win raised Pennridge’s record to 8-3, with a home game against North Penn slated for Monday. Souderton is now 2-7, with a road game at Cheltenham up next on Friday.
Fantaskey and Unzicker each poured in three goals and helped the Rams surge to a 13-3 lead by halftime.
Said Unzicker: “We’re definitely seeing improvements and we’re getting better. And we’re really starting to mesh and it’s working out for us.”
Ten different players contributed goals for Pennridge, including Taylor Burkett, Leah Verespy, Alexa Bailey and Madigan Posey with two each.
The attack came in waves.
“We’ve been working on a new offensive set,” said coach Karen Feher. “And it’s starting to work. It’s starting to mesh. They’re a great group of girls. All seven of them that are out there are a big threat on the attack. Any one of them can score.”
The Rams were also tight on the back end, with keeper Anjali Verma making some nice stops.
“Anj is our sophomore goalie back there and we have some senior leadership back there on defense too,” said Feher.
She added: “Our last two weeks are a little challenging but I think all of this is gonna help us with that back half of the schedule.”
Ang Borisow had another solid game for Big Red, helping to lead the attack and scoring twice.
