Borisow, Gavetti both score 5 goals, Souderton rolls past CB East for 2nd straight win

FRANCONIA >> After opening the season with four straight losses, the pieces are starting to come together for the Souderton girls lacrosse team.

Senior Ang Borisow and freshman Carly Gavetti paced an attack that scored Wednesday night’s first eight goals while the Indians defense held visiting Central Bucks East to just one goal in the first half as Souderton made it back-to-back wins by rolling past the Patriots for a 16-4 SOL National Conference victory.

“I feel like it was rough at the beginning of the season and we’ve trying to put the little things together to put together the big picture,” Borisow said. “And tonight we really put together the big picture and came out with a win.”

Borisow and Gavetti both had a game-best five goals, Borisow collecting four in the first half — her strike at 4:29 sending the Indians (2-4, 1-1 conference) into the break leading 10-1.

“I’m a very aggressive player,” Borisow said. “So I came out to win tonight and I think the fire within me, I just wanted to score a lot tonight.”

Souderton scored the first four goals in the second half, as consecutive tallies from Gavetti gave Big Red its biggest lead at 14-1.

“The plays we ran we ran them all the way through, other games we would stop halfway through or get messed up,” said Borisow, who is committed to Rider University for field hockey. “And I think it really reflected that we were able to push through the little kinks that their defense threw at us tonight and we were able to finish with a score on each of the plays.”

Tatum Andrews scored twice in the first half and finished with three goals while Avery Farina added two goals for the Indians.

“I’m extremely happy, this group has been working hard all season and they’ve been trying to put the little pieces together to kind of let the bigger picture fall together,” Souderton first-year coach Alicia Stratten said. “And it’s just so exciting for them, that they’ve finally being able to come out with these W’s and not fall behind by that just one goal so it’s great.”

Paige Dougherty scored twice to lead CB East (5-4, 1-1), which had a two-game win streak snapped.

While Souderton began the year 0-4, three of the losses came by just a goal — 11-10 to Lansdale Catholic March 23, 9-8 to Central Bucks South March 29 then falling in overtime 9-8 to Quakertown April 4.

“Slow starts and then the fire got lit more as the game went on but the girls never gave up a single minute of the game,” Stratten said. “And our competition just unfortunately was able to get one more in the back of the net than we were. But even still, even though we were falling behind by that one goal they put in two solid halves of lacrosse every single time and you can’t be disappointed with that.”

Stratten — who won two PAC titles at Boyertown then at East Stroudsburg University played on teams that won the PSAC title in 2017 and reached the NCAA Division II national semifinals in 2018 — finally earned her first victory with Souderton Tuesday as it rolled past Lower Moreland 21-6.

“It’s been really great,” Stratten said. “It’s interesting cause we have a young program this year and they’re trying to learn my coaching style as well as learning how to work together and kind of create that energy and communication together. And I think that they’re doing a really great job, they’re all very eager to learn and they come every day ready to work and it’s just really wonderful.”

Souderton plays its third game in four days Thursday, facing Coatesville at home in a nonleague contest at 5 p.m. The Indians return to SOL National competition Monday when they host Pennsbury at 5 p.m. CB East also had a conference game Monday, hosting North Penn at 7 p.m.

Andrews gave Souderton a 1-0 lead just 39 seconds into the first half. After Borisow converted on an eight-meter shot at 22:44, Andrews added her second at 21:10 to make it 3-0. Gavetti scored the next two goals, extending the lead to five at 13:59.

“She is a dynamite freshman,” said Stratten of Gavetti. “She’s got so much potential and I’m really excited to see where she’s able to go in these next four years.”

Borisow, a Class 3A first team all-state field hockey selection the past two falls, proceeded to score back-to-back goals in a span of 16 seconds, the second at 11:31 off an Ava Shaw assist.

“I started field hockey in kindergarten, I started lacrosse in first grade as early as I could,” Borisow said. “My mom coached me all the way up through middle school, so I think she played a really big part in me starting early. And I’ve loved both of them, I think I started liking field hockey a little bit better in middle school but I kept up with lacrosse cause it kept up my endurance and skills.”

Shaw struck off a Gavetti assist to make it 8-0 at 9:36 before Dougherty posted East’s first goal on an eight-meter shot at 6:42. But a tally from Farina before Borisow notched her fourth goal of the half made it a 10-1 lead for Souderton at intermission.

“Ang is such a dependable athlete,” said Stratten of Borisow. “She really sets the pace and a lot of the girls on the team look up to her and how she creates a lot of opportunities not only for herself but for the players that are around her. And she’s just a great overall team player.”

Andrews began the second-half scoring on an eight meter. After a Farina goal, Gavetti collected the next two — on the second stealing a goalkeeper pass behind the net and coming around to score — for a 14-1 advantage. Gavetti’s fifth goal made it 15-3 while Borisow tallied her fifth by ripping in a shot off a Gavetti assist for the last goal of the night.
