DLN Roundup: Whippets’ Schumann hurls a no-hitter

Pitcher Rachael Schumann notched a no-hitter to lead the Downingtown East softball squad to a 14-0 five-inning victory over West Chester Henderson on Monday. Schumann struck out 11 batters and issued one walk. The Cougars offense registered 14 hits, including three each by Sophia Kucera and Lily Waterer. Kucera drove in five and Waterer had two hits and two RBI.

Downingtown West 11, Coatesville 1 (5 innings) >> The Whippets scored the first 11 runs and cruised to a Ches-Mont win. Pitcher’s Addison Carter and Taylor Hendricks combined to limit the Raiders to two hits. Lizzie Kern went 3-for-3 and Hendricks drove in four runs for West.

Boys Tennis

Oxford 7, Kennett 0 >> The Hornets swept the Devils in Ches-Mont action. In singles, Jacob Horton topped Copper Seole 6-1, 6-0, Liam Hale defeated Logan Leighton 6-1, 6-3, and at No. 3, Luke Schoessler won 6-2, 6-0 against Yuri Gerovasilion.

Unionville 6, Great Valley 1 >> The Longhorns swept all four doubles matches, including a 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3 for the team of Manuel Prem and Shivam Maheshwari. The Patriots’ lone singles win came at No. 3, where Vivek Arvind won a three setter, 7-6 (7-5), 1-6, 6-3.

Swimming

Carozza named performer of the year >> West Chester University was represented on the 2023 PhillySIDA Academic All-Area Swim teams. Fifth-year senior Ann Carozza (West Chester East) was named the performer of the year. Carozza was joined on the all-area women’s team by junior Mikayla Niness. Carozza and Niness were two of only three unanimous selections to the academic all-area team.

The Golden Rams men’s team sported a pair of honorees: fifth-year senior Logan Brockway and sophomore Dalton Fink, who were selected for their accomplishments both in the pool and the classroom.

Women’s Tennis

Immaculata 6, Neumann 3 >> The Macs prevailed in Atlantic East Conference action. In doubles, the No. 1 team of Annamarie Degnan and Pamales Kotaras won 8-2, and the second team of Delaney Brown and Jenna Muttik notched an 8-6 victory. Degnan, Kontaras, Brown and Sydney Mehaffey all won in singles action.
