Archbishop Wood in high gear, rolls past Olney in District 12-6A 3rd place game
PHILADELPHIA >> Out of all the offensive output that Archbishop Wood produced on Wednesday night, one statistic — 26 assists — was maybe most satisfying.
“(What I take away from this is) the way we shared the ball,” Vikings coach John Mosco said after his team’s District 12-6A third-place clash with Olney. “We shared the ball and a lot of guys scored. When we’re sharing the ball and moving without the ball, we’re hard to guard. When we try to go one against the world, we’re easy.”
The Vikings were very difficult to guard Wednesday night at Father Judge High School, as an overwhelming performance ended in an 88-47 victory that sends Wood into states with some steam.
“We hadn’t played since last Wednesday. We had a week off and it was hard to bounce back after The Palestra (and the loss to Roman Catholic in the PCL semis),” said Mosco. “But the guys realized it was: you win, you keep playing. You lose, you go home. We did enough to get going.”
The Vikings sputtered to a 14-10 lead after one but then turned on the jets.
The Vikings broke the game open in the second quarter and were dunking and alley-ooping in the third. A pair of slams by Milan Dean (12 points) got the Vikings going and Dean was also on the receiving end of one alley oop, and Carey Maxey set up Jalil Bethea on the other.
Eleven different players scored for Wood and four were in double figures.
“Now we don’t play again until next Saturday so we have a lot of practices ahead of us,” Mosco said. “We’re off (Thursday) and then we’ll practice and be off Sunday. We’re probably gonna scrimmage somebody on Tuesday.”
Maxey’s 17 points were the game high for Wood, with Bethea adding 12 and Eric Gardner contributing 13.
Wood was not only dominant around the basket but also spotted open shooters to the tune of a dozen 3-pointers.
Matthew Roman’s nine points were the high for Olney.
