Main Line roundup: Conestoga, Haverford School wrestlers win

The Conestoga High School wrestling team defeated Garnet Valley, 43-25, Jan. 11. For the Pioneers (4-0 Central League, 10-1 overall), it was their first win over the Jaguars since 2012. Steve Wiechecki (121 pounds) won a tight decision and Matt Boye (160) earned a major decision in key wins for Conestoga. Parker Warkentine (114), Charlie Mucklow (127), Hayden McLellan (172) and Bryce Beltrante (215) pinned for the Pioneers.

The Haverford School wrestling team posted a 4-1 mark at the Buckley Duals Jan. 14. The Fords lost to Archbishop Ryan (39-30) and defeated Archbishop Carroll (42-24), Central (46-24), Academy of the New Church (36-24) and Pottstown (57-6). For the Fords, Matt Brosko earned four pins, while Cole Lisowski, Billy Brosko and Jay McDonnell recorded three falls each.

Boys’ basketball

Conestoga defeated Penncrest, 39-21, Jan. 13. The Pioneers got 11 points from Ben Robinson (including three treys) and nine points from Westin Fryberger.

Episcopal Academy lost to Penn Charter, 56-49, Jan. 13. For EA, Timmy Dennis scored 13 points, and both TJ Lamb and Kevin McCarthy scored 12 points.

Haverford School defeated Springside Chestnut Hill, 51-50, Jan. 13. KJ Carson led the Fords with 14 points and teammate Duke Cloran chipped in with 10 points.

Lower Merion improved its record to 12-1 (7-1 in the Central League) with an 84-30 win against Strath Haven Jan. 12. Thirteen different Aces scored and for the second consecutive game, Lower Merion dished out 20 assists.

Two days earlier, the Aces defeated Marple Newtown 71-57, led by John Mobley (21 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists) and Sam Brown (15 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists).

Malvern Prep defeated Germantown Academy, 70-58, Jan. 13. Andrew Phillips led the Friars with 29 points, and teammate Ryan Williams chipped in with 20.

 

 

Girls’ basketball

Academy of Notre Dame defeated Springside Chestnut Hill, 47-18, Jan. 13. The Irish were led by Annie Greek (11 points) and Catie Kelly (10 points).

Agnes Irwin lost to  Episcopal Academy, 47- 24, Jan. 13. The Owls’ leading scorer was Simone Harvey (nine points).

Barrack Hebrew Academy won the Sam Gyenes Tournament in New York City Jan. 15. The Cougars (8-6) won the title game against Flatbush, 58-37, led by Eden Singer (14 points), Noa Singer (14), Sami Neff (13) and Mikayla Trajtenberg (10).

In the tournament semifinal, the Cougars defeated SAR, 68-40. Trajtenberg scored 24 points and Eden Singer chipped in with 18.

Conestoga defeated Penncrest, 51-36, Jan. 12. The Pioneers were led by junior Marisa Francione (12 points, 9 rebounds), freshmann Ryann Jennings (12 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists), sophomore Janie Preston (11 points, 6 rebounds) and junior Bella Valencia (6 points, 4 rebounds).

Merion Mercy Academy defeated Jenkintown, 44-19, Jan. 13. Maggie Iannone led the Golden Bears with 10 points.

Villa Maria Academy lost to Germantown Academy, 55-39, Jan. 13. The Hurricanes were led by Marah McHugh (13 points).

One day earlier, the Hurricanes defeated Gwynedd Mercy, 40-32, getting nine points from McHugh and 10 from Clare Cronley.

 

 

Swimming

Conestoga (boys) defeated Upper Darby, 98-56, Jan. 13. Individual winners for the Pioneers included Noel Park (200 free), Brock Whitaker (200 IM and 100 free), Andrew Zhang (50 free and 500 free) and John Yeniay (100 fly).

The Conestoga girls defeated Upper Darby, 101-43, Jan. 11. Individual winners for the Pioneers included Maddie Fox (200 free), Sarah Fox (200 IM), Lily Robinson (50 free), Jena Nowoswiat (100 fly), Ayala Miller (100 free) and Audrey Laganelli (500 free).

Episcopal Academy (boys) defeated Penn Charter, 112-74, Jan. 11. Churchmen who won individual events included Chase Bearley (200 free, 100 free), Owen McCabe (diving), Alec Tsaturyan (100 back), Jacob Kim (100 breast).

The EA girls lost to Penn Charter, 118-67, Jan. 11. Churchwomen who won individual events included Emma Lunn (200 free), Joy Ying (diving),

Haverford School defeated Malvern Prep, 105-78, Jan. 10. Ford individual winners included Max Marr (200 IM and 100 fly, new team record for both), Evan Boratto (200 free, 400 free), AJ Rosenberger (diving, new team record), Zack Oswald (100 free, 100 back) and Henry Newhall (100 breast).

 

Indoor track

Radnor (girls) performed well at The Golden Bear Invitational at Kutztown University. Pole vaulter Sophia Hill won her event clearing 11 feet. Zoe Margolies finished second in the 1600 meter. Courtney Kearns placed second in the 800 meter. Hill and Kearns combined with Lauriel Morrison and Julia Salinero to take fifth place in the 800 meter relay.
