Quakertown takes care of Upper Dublin
UPPER DUBLIN >> Quakertown’s Suburban One League Liberty Division dominance continued Wednesday night. The Panthers, who’ve won six straight league titles, improved to 2-0 in league play with a 49-12 win over Upper Dublin at Upper Dublin High School.
Despite the early-season wins over Abington and Upper Dublin, Quakertown knows it has work to do to bring home a seventh straight league championship.
“I wouldn’t say (we’re feeling) happy because the job hasn’t been finished yet,” Quakertown junior Calvin Lachman said. “There’s not much to be happy about until it’s over.”
Waylen Strzelski (107), Mason Ziegler (121), Collin Gaj (145), Zach Borzio (160), Lachman (215) and Keondre Lopez (289) recorded pins in the victory over the Cardinals. Strzelski, Gaj, Borzio and Lachman finished their matches in the first period while Ziegler and Lopez pinned their opponents in the second period.
Lachman’s match was especially quick. It took him just 20 seconds to pin his opponent, who was an Upper Dublin JV wrestler filling in for the injured starter. Lachman is 14-2 this season with both losses on forfeits.
“Most of my game is on my feet,” Lachman, who was a state qualifier last season, said. “I like to get a lot done on my feet, tire them out and then get it done on top.”
Isaac Williams (114), Logan Pfistner, Kyler Roesener (133) and Dylan Fenstermacher won by points for the Panthers, who improved to 4-5 overall with the win.
“We’ve got a great thing going here at Quakertown,” Lachman said. “Our record doesn’t really show how talented we are and how connected we are, but I really believe in our future even though a lot of people don’t see us as we do. I think we could end up on top of the podium at districts, especially with the coaching staff and all the people. We really do have a good thing going.”
Gavin Rockey (172) won with a first-round pin for Upper Dublin while Dan Gorman (139) and Austin Pendleton (152) won by points.
The Cardinals (9-2, 1-1 SOL Liberty) wrestled shorthanded, missing their regulars at 107, 121, 215 an 289.
“(Quakertown) beat us where I thought we could win,” Upper Dublin coach David Jones said. “We didn’t wrestle well at (133), we didn’t wrestle well at (139). We should’ve got a stick at (152) and didn’t. Those are big changes where we could have picked up another six, nine points. I did not think coming in that we were going to matchup well with the holes we had, but I didn’t think we’d be down at that level.”
