Hatboro-Horsham girls, Souderton boys earn impressive wins
HORSHAM >> After getting a taste of the substantial winter training that lie ahead – tough swims along with weight training, it was uncertain how fast Hatboro-Horsham would go on Tuesday afternoon when rival Souderton came to visit.
The Hatters set pool records.
“We went pretty hard yesterday and today so I was kind of shocked they were still moving the way they were,” coach Kip Emig said. “That’s nice to see. I didn’t expect that at all.”
Kathy Jia set a pool record in the 200-yard freestyle, sister Annie broke Kathy’s record in the 200 IM, and the Hatters dashed to a 98-72 victory over rival Souderton. Meanwhile the Big Red boys were again impressive, powering to a 93-77 win over the Hatters in a Suburban One League non-division double dual meet between District One powers.
The Jia sisters, who helped lead the way to a state title last winter, left impressive marks at their home pool.
Kathy recorded a winning time of 1 minute, 54.17 seconds in the 200 free, surpassing the 1:54.34 by Vivi Vergara-Anglim (Navy) of the Hatters.
“That’s a really good record to have,” Emig said. “And Annie, she puts her mind to something, she’s gonna do it.”
Annie, a sophomore for the Hatters, pushed to 2:03.47 in the 200 IM, replacing the 2:05.35 by Kathy Jia.
Hatboro-Horsham almost had another record – Sarah Parker was just a hundredth of a second off in the 50 free. Nevertheless, she won the event in 24.18.
Parker also won the 500 free, Kathy Jia won the 100 breast, and Annie Jia touched first in the 100 back. The three were also instrumental in the Hatters sweeping the relay events.
“After some ups and downs over the summer, everything’s starting to work out,” said a smiling Kathy Jia.
She had to take some time off during the summer due to shin splints, but now is in the midst of another incredible season. She heads to Dartmouth next year.
“We have a lot planned,” she said of the upcoming training. “Come January, we’ll be used to it. I still can’t believe it’s my senior year and I start college next year. It’s hard to find words. But it’s all coming together.”
William Stanczewski continued to impress for the Souderton boys, winning the 200 free in 1:50.94. Robbie Ferlick won both the 50 free (21.93) and 100 free (48.24).
Jack Giuliana, Ethan Cooper, Spencer Alderson and David Ji all had tremendous afternoons for the Hatter guys.
“Now we can focus on the training, have the older swimmers teach the young ones, that (the soreness) is normal,” Emig said of the busy days ahead. “They’ll tell them to stop looking at the clock and being upset about time. Just focus on training and focus on little things and we’ll get to the time later.”
