Souderton boys, girls look impressive in wins over Quakertown
FRANCONIA >> Distancing himself from the competition of the present while also closing in on history, Robbie Ferlick exemplified Souderton’s fast start to the dual meet season.
“It was great. I felt really strong,” said the senior, who won a total of four events on Wednesday against Quakertown. “I feel like the preseason really got us in shape. And we got a good amount of yardage in. Overall, I think it was a good meet.”
The Big Red boys swam and dove to a 121-46 victory over the Panthers in the Suburban One League non-division contest while the Souderton girls were 106-69 winners over visiting Quakertown.
“Great start to the season,” said Ferlick, whose time of 21.99 seconds in the 50 free brings him closer to the pool record (21.0). “I’ve been working hard and lifting outside of practice and getting stronger. So I think it will help overall.”
Said Ferlick of chasing the record: “It’s been a goal of mine ever since freshman year. I always wanted my name up on that board.”
Ferlick also swam to a victory in the 100 free (48.20) and was part of two first-place relays. He joined Abraham Bleazard, Elijah Gehman and Nathan Kleppinger to go 1:43.11 in the medley – kick-starting the meet – and teamed up with Gian Carlo Bocchino, Logan Freed and Matvey Andryushin for a 1:32.37 in the 200 free relay.
“Robbie looked great in the sprints,” said Big Red coach Lou Williams. “That 21.99 is a good place for him to start his season.”
Said Williams: “Will Stanczewski had a great 100 breaststroke (1:01.32, swam as an exhibition). We gave him kind of limited duty today so he could focus on that and get that time. Jess Burns, a really experienced breaststroker, multiple-state qualifier, went (1:06.34 as an exhibition), which is a good swim for her right now.”
Matthew Meehan and Avery Taylor both looked solid up on the diving board to give Big Red additional points. Logan Freed won the 200 free by over five seconds and Burns looked smooth in the 200 IM. Anna Stauffer pushed to wins in the 200 free and 500 free and led off the first-place 200 free relay.
“We had a pretty good couple weeks of training,” Williams said. “This was our first dual meet so it was a good look at where we’re at. And the coaches and I are cautiously optimistic – it looked really good today.”
Big Red packed its schedule with 15 dual meets this winter.
“We’re still working at it,” Ferlick said, “but I think overall we did a great job today.”
