EA girls tennis team captures 5th consecutive Inter-Ac championship
The Episcopal Academy girls tennis team recently captured its fifth consecutive Inter-Ac championship, clinching the title after defeating Academy of Notre Dame, 6-1, Oct. 25.
“This team is particularly deep, which makes beating us pretty difficult,” said EA head coach Whitaker Powell. “We have the perfect combination of senior leadership, top talent, and outstanding doubles specialists. That is the recipe for success.
“I think the biggest compliment I can give this team is they show up in the biggest of moments. They have an emotional bond that is unique in an individual sport.”
The Churchwomen (15-1) have one match remaining, against Agnes Irwin on EA/AIS Day Nov. 11.
“The players genuinely care about each other as people and, combining that with real talent, makes us a good team,” said Powell, who recently marked his 300th match as EA girls tennis head coach. “Our outstanding seniors, Maggie Lo, Riya Mukherjee, Maggie Dugery, Elizabeth Boruff and Amelia Wandrasch, have provided a level-headed approach throughout a challenging and emotional season. That is the biggest reason we have been successful.”
Episcopal Academy has won the Inter-Ac girls’ tennis title nine of the last 10 years – due to the COVID-19 pandemic, an Inter-Ac champion was not crowned in 2020.
