Reporter/Times Herald/Montgomery Media Week 9 Football: Souderton, Upper Dublin battle for 1st place in SOL Continental

There’s a battle for the top spot in the Suburban One League Continental Conference, as Souderton travels to Upper Dublin Friday night for a key Week Nine matchup.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

Both teams bring matching 4-0 conference records into the showdown.

Big Red is 7-1 overall, coming off a 23-0 shutout of Council Rock South. The Cardinals are unbeaten at 8-0, fresh off a 44-14 rout of Truman.

It is also a matchup of two squads gearing up for the playoffs, as Souderton is currently sixth in District 1-6A and Upper Dublin is second in District 1-5A.

Said Souderton coach Ed Gallagher: “Upper Dublin has us circled on their calendar and we’ve had them circled on our calendar for months now.”

Souderton’s defense is coming off a tremendous showing.

Big Red’s defensive line and linebackers completely shut down the run last week against Rock South. The Golden Hawks only had two rushes of 10 or more yards and couldn’t sustain any drives throughout the game.

Souderton was also stellar against the pass, allowing just 18 yards through the air with an interception. Pressure up front and tight coverage in the back keyed the shutout.

Senior quarterback Jared Zimmerman weaved his way to a 68-yard touchdown run and kept finding senior Shaun Purvy, who had four second-half catches for 73 yards.

Upper Dublin had a similar result against CR South on Oct. 7, winning 16-0.

Said Cardinal receiver Griffin Pensabene after the win: “We’ve got Souderton (on Oct. 21). If we play like that, defensively we’ll be fine, but we’ve got to do something on offense for it to be a good game.”

Upper Dublin’s offense looked much more in sync last week, piling up 44 points against the Tigers. Quarterback Colin O’Sullivan continues to click with his receivers.

Last year, it was a defensive battle between the two perennial powers.

The Upper Dublin defense was there all the way to the end, coming through with two key stops in the fourth quarter to help produce a 10-7 victory over Big Red in a battle of defending District One Champions.
