Plymouth Whitemarsh celebrates Senior Night in style

WHITEMARSH >> Plymouth Whitemarsh honored its senior class prior to its game against Wissahickon Friday night, but the celebration didn’t stop at kickoff.

Upperclassmen dominated the first half as the Colonials routed the rival Trojans, 56-6, at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School.

Aiden O’Brien threw a pair of touchdowns on offense and returned an interception for a touchdown on defense. Tommy Hannon ran for three touchdowns. Seve Spruill and Jared Kolsun caught touchdowns. These senior scoring plays helped the Colonials build a 49-0 first-half lead.

“It was great,” O’Brien said. “We did exactly what we wanted to do. Everybody played well. Jared got to kick some extra points. It was awesome.”

“It was amazing at home, Senior Night,” Hannon said. “I couldn’t ask for anything better, really. It was awesome.”

Hannon got the scoring started. After Wissahickon tried an onsides kick to open the game, Hannon took the second play from scrimmage 49 yards for a touchdown.

“I didn’t score last week so I really wanted to score on the first drive,” Hannon, who credited the offensive line for his five-carry, 94-yard performance, said. “I’m just glad I was able to do that.”

After a Wissahickon three-and-out, the Colonials (7-2, 4-0 SOL American) scored on the second play of the drive again. This time it was O’Brien hitting Spruill for a 62-yard touchdown.

Later in the first quarter, O’Brien found Kolsun on 3rd-and-goal from 13 yards out to make it 22-0.

Plymouth Whitemarsh removed any doubt when it scored three touchdowns in 37 seconds early in the second quarter.

Hannon got it started with a five-yard score. He punched it in two plays after an O’Brien 54-yard keeper put the Colonials inside the 15-yard line.

On the first play of Wissahickon’s ensuing drive, O’Brien grabbed an interception and raced 30 yards for a touchdown.

“I saw the receiver run a little hook and I’ve seen that in film that they sprint to it and he looks there first,” O’Brien said. “I just got under it and took it to the house.”

Wissahickon (1-8, 1-3 SOL American) fumbled on the first play of its next drive, and Hannon immediately raced 29 yards for a touchdown and 42-0 lead.

The Colonials starting offense totaled 17 plays. They gained 276 yards and scored five touchdowns on five possessions.

“We were doing our normal stuff,” O’Brien said. “We were just clicking. The linemen were getting to their blocks. They did a great job once again. Downfield blocking – we get those big plays. We were just able to hit the holes.”

Nazye Boggs added a 41-yard touchdown run before half to make it 49-0.

Jaden McLean ran for a five-yard touchdown to get Wiss on the board in the third quarter and PW’s Luke Laviola finished the scoring with a nine-yard run in the fourth.

While the Colonials offense was moving up-and-down the field, their defense was dominating. They held the Trojans to 71 total yards while grabbing an interception and recovering two fumbles.

“Every week we plan on stopping the run first and then stopping the pass,” Hannon said. “We just held our gaps, filled the holes. We trust in each other for everybody to do their jobs.”
