Main Line roundup (Oct. 5-10): Conestoga captures top two spots in Central League doubles tournament

It was an all-Conestoga championship final in the Central League doubles tournament Oct. 8, with freshman Isabelle Emmanuel and junior Kate Emmanuel defeating Jennifer He and Bella Chen in the final, 6-3, 6-1. During the season, Isabelle Emmanuel has been undefeated at first singles for Conestoga (13-0 as of Monday) and Kate Emmanuel has only one loss at second singles. Jennifer He has filled the third singles spot for Conestoga this fall, and Chen has played first doubles.
Radnor’s Leina Ciarrocchi and Mia Xie finished third in the Central League doubles tournament; Harriton’s Rachel Wang and Kelly Tong placed fifth; Radnor’s Emma Fox and Sophie Carter finished sixth; Harriton’s Julia Carrasco and Lucy Sun was seventh; and Lower Merion’s Brody Smith and Anna Costantino placed eighth.
Here’s a look at the Main Line high school sports action during Oct. 5-10 (the local roundup is compiled from game summaries sent to badams@mainlinemedianews.com):

Boys’ soccer
Conetoga defeated Lower Merion, 3-2, in overtime Oct. 6. The Pioneers trailed 2-0 with four minutes left when Conestoga’s Westin Fryberger scored to cut the Aces’ lead to 2-1. With just over a minute left in the game, Conestoga’s Diego Ramirez scored to tie the game at 2-2. The Pioneers’ Cole Frederick scored the sudden victory game-winning goal with six minutes left in the second overtime. As of Monday (Oct. 10), Lower Merion was ranked No. 1 in the PIAA District 1 4A boys soccer power rankings, and Conestoga was No. 2.
Episcopal Academy defeated Malvern Prep, 2-1, Oct. 6. For EA (8-1-2 overall, 2-0 Inter-Ac), Eddie Jones scored two goals on penalty kicks, and Akira Heath recorded one save. For Malvern Prep, Cole Watts scored, assisted by Aedan McLees. MP goalie Patrick Conway recorded six saves.
Haverford School opened Inter-Ac play with a 2-0 win against Malvern Prep. Andrew Kirwan netted a brace, with Connor Cresswell and the Ford defense provided the shutout.

Girls’ soccer
Academy of Notre Dame defeated Springfield, 2-0, Oct. 5. Goals were scored by senior captain Audrey Cain on an overlap, and Lola Pena, who received an accurate through ball from Cain.
Agnes Irwin defeated host Penn Charter, 1-0, Oct. 7, on a second half goal by Emma Watson, assisted by Gabby Bongiorno.
Episcopal Academy defeated Academy of Notre Dame, 2-0, Oct. 7. Maya Bright scored both goals, Chelsea Swei dished out two assists and goalie Faith Leake recorded the shutout.
Villa Maria Academy defeated Merion Mercy, 7-2, Monday. For the Hurricanes (12-1 overall, 6-1 AACA), Carly Catania scored four goals, Kaelyn Wolfe tallied two goals and three assists and Kate Kemmerley scored one goal and dished out two assists. For Merion Mercy, Lily Denn scored her 11th goal of the season and Ella Donnelly tallied a goal, while goalie Raph Autieri had 13 saves.

Field hockey
Academy of Notre Dame defeated Episcopal Academy, 5-1, Oct. 7. For the Irish (9-2 overall, 4-0 Inter-Ac), Saylor Milone had a hat trick, and Kiera Sack and Maeve Seeger each tallied single goals. Brennan Czajkowski dished out two assists, and goalie Alex Duff recorded eight saves. For EA, Charly Bruder scored a goal.
Agnes Irwin defeated Penn Charter, 6-0, Oct. 7. Lauren DeRose, Natalya Russin, Ali Gerber, Charlotte Roe, Caroline Chisholm and Catie Holmes scored goals, while DeRose, Chisholm and KK Lerch dished out assists.

Girls’ tennis
Episcopal Academy defeated Germantown Academy, 7-0, Oct. 7, getting wins at singles from kamora Helton (first singles), Avery Morris (second singles) and Carter Yearley (third singles). The duo of Maggie Dugery/Izzy Rozes won first doubles at straight sets, and the pair of Maggie Lo/Elizabeth Boruff won second doubles in straight sets.
Radnor defeated Harriton, 4-1, in the first round of the PIAA District 1 3A team tournament Monday. The No. 8 seeded Raptors took an early 2-0 lead thanks to straight set wins by Mia Xie at second singles and Leina Ciarrocchi at first singles. Harriton’s Julia Carrasco won third singles in three sets, then less than a minute later Radnor’s first doubles team of Emma Fox and Sophie Carter won in three sets. The Raptors also won second doubles, with Amelia Hilbert and Chloe Simonian.

Girls’ volleyball
Academy of Notre Dame (8-4 overall) defeated Conestoga, 3-1, Oct. 7, posting scores of 25-23, 25-15, 22-25 and 25-23. Xavier University-bound Margo Kemp was a standout, with  18 kills and 12 blocks. Maddi Brown and Megan Dougherty tallied a combined 15 kills for the Irish.
Lower Merion defeated Villa Maria Academy, 3-1, Oct. 7, posting scores of 22-25, 25-20, 25-16 and 25-23. The Aces were led by the Claire Hamilton who had 25 kills, 10 digs and 4 aces. Brooke Johnson also posted a double-double with 15 kills, 13 digs, and two aces. Zoe Brown led the defense with 27 digs, two aces and eight assists, while Tianna Stavrianos posted 41 assists, 15 digs and three aces.

Cross country
Agnes Irwin won a tri-meet against Baldwin and Springside Chestnut Hill Monday, as the Owls took the top three spots – Avery Brennan (first place, 22:28), Orchie Hasan (second place, 22:39) and Ella Brown (third place, 23:25).
Radnor had some strong performances at the Delaware Ccounty Championships Oct. 8. Junior Zoe Margolis finished third in the girls varsity 5K race, and sophomore Emma Hyde placed 26th. In the boys varsity race junior Luke Bodden placed fourth (16:21).

Water polo
Malvern Prep defeated Episcopal Academy, 11-9, Oct. 7. The Friars (5-7) were led on offense by Max McGovern (four goals, two assists), Drew Kenneday (two goals, one assist, two kickouts drawn) and Ethan McNally (two goals, three kickouts drawn and four field blocks). Carter Marks made 12 saves, had two steals and three assists from his goalie position to lead the Friars defense. Patrick Buysee played solid defensively and had a goal, two steals and two kickouts drawn while Seamus Deviney and Louis DelFra also scored.
