Souderton attack in high gear in win over Warwick

FRANCONIA >> There was plenty of zip in Souderton’s offensive execution — and plenty of points on the scoreboard — as Big Red rolled to a commanding 45-24 victory over visiting Warwick Friday night.

Said quarterback Jared Zimmerman, who had a major hand in Souderton success: “It’s just amazing to see everybody get a chance to score and see all my teammates really happy and having fun out there.”

Souderton scored in the opening moments and never slowed down. Big Red raised its record to 6-1 and took another firm step towards the postseason.

“Our kids responded. It was Homecoming for them and they were excited to play in front of a big crowd,” coach Ed Gallagher said.

Zimmerman threw three touchdown passes – to three different receivers – and three different runners reached the end zone as well.

“That was pretty amazing scoring on the first drive, and then we just kept it rolling from there,” Zimmerman said.

After a field goal by Warwick’s Ian Jerchau made it 7-3, Souderton was right back in the end zone just moments later. Kerns dashed in from five yards out to widen the margin to 14-3.

“We were rolling pretty well,” said Gallagher, “and Chris Kerns is a really good running back. His leg was bothering him a little bit later in the night so we were able to get Logan (Wrubel) in a little bit towards the end of the game and he ran pretty well for us too at fullback. We’re blessed with really good skill kids and our o-line did a good job opening the holes for them. So overall, it was a really solid offensive performance.”

A 32-yard field goal by Ty Quintois and Zimmerman’s second TD pass – 19 yards to Winday Dawson – helped give Big Red a 24-10 edge at halftime.

Shaun Purvy darted into the end zone from a yard out to keep Big Red going in the third quarter, and when Zimmerman connected with Danny Dyches for a 12-yard touchdown, it was 38-17 Souderton with just a quarter to play.

“Jared was solid again,” Gallagher said. “He is having a really good senior season. I couldn’t be more proud of the kid. He just comes to work every day, has a great mentality, and our kids work. So I’m really pleased with the way the season is going.”

Wrubel rumbled for 49 yards to complete the scoring for Souderton.

Jack Reed had a strong night for the visiting Warriors, throwing for three scores: two to Brendon Snyder (8, 69 yards) and one to Trevor Evans (13 yards).

“We knew coming in their quarterback is really good,” Gallagher said. “He’s a good passer, a good runner, and they have capable receivers. They gave us a couple issues and we made an adjustment towards the end that helped us cover a little bit better.”

A sack by Souderton’s Jayden Bergey helped lock things up for Big Red.

Souderton would score points on ts first seven possessions of the contest.

“The offense really executed well tonight,” Gallagher said. “I was thrilled with how we were able to keep getting points on just about every drive we had.”
