DLN local roundup: Two Henderson duos advance to Ches-Mont National doubles semifinals
Two doubles teams from West Chester Henderson High School advanced to the semifinals of the Ches-Mont National League girls tennis doubles tournament Thursday. The top seeded duo of Henderson’s Kaitlyn Evans and Kiera Koay advanced with a 6-3, 6-4 win in the quarterfinals; while the Warrior pair of Amelia Jarden and Madelyn Walsh came back for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 quarterfinal victory.
The Downingtown East pair of Danielle Litvan and Twisha Dudgundi earned a 6-2, 2-6, 6-0 quarterfinal win to advance; while the No. 2 seed duo of Bishop Shanahan’s Ella Matulewicz and Renee Kinard battled to win their quarterfinal match, 5-7, 6-4, 7-5.
The semifinals, to be played Friday Oct. 7, pit Evans/Koay against Litvan/Dudgundi, and Jarden/Walsh against Matulewicz/Kinard.
Girls’ volleyball
West Chester East 3, Downingtown West 2 >> The Vikings rallied to win this contest, posting scores of 27-29, 19-25, 25-19, 25-15, 15-7. West Chester East was led by Alexa Mork (25 kills, 2 aces, 23 digs, 2 blocks), Annie Kerns had (10 kills, 1 ace, 3 digs), Elliet Manning (7 kills, 7 aces, 37 assists, 13 digs, 2 blocks), Izzy Byrne (12 digs, 1 ace) and Lauren Cuskey (4 kills). The host Whippets were led by Camryn Tuffner (18 kills, 2 blocks), Darby Weller (13 kills, 16 digs, 4 blocks), Melanie Bowman (28 assists, 16 digs), Sarah Sherner (14 assists, 11 digs), Bella Terra (30 digs, 2 aces), Emma Helveston (8 kills, 4 blocks), Maddie McCole (6 kills, 7 blocks) and Fallon Mitchell (7 blocks).
West Chester Henderson 3, West Chester Rustin 0 >> The Warriors prevailed with scores of 25-20, 25-13 and 25-22. For Henderson, Olivia Sladicka had 17 kills and Abby Maguire dished out 32 assists. The Golden Knights were led by junior Jane Nelson (16 kills, 16 digs) and senior Kylie Root (27 assists).
Girls golf
Unionville 168, Avon Grove 235 >> The Longhorns won at the Inniscrone Golf Club to finish the regular season undefeated in the Ches-Mont League with a 10-0 record. Unionville senior Mary Dunigan was low scorer, shooting a 1-over-par 36 for nine holes. Other top Longhorn scores were shot by Reagan Wilson (42), Mira Patel (43) and Sarina Patel (47). Delaney Driscoll led Avon Grove with a 54.
Field hockey
Kennett 3, Avon Grove 1 >> The Blue Demons came up with a big win on their Senior Night. Kennett scored its initial goal with one minute remaining in the first quarter when Britney Sedano deflected a corner shot in from the post. In the second quarter Bridget Wells found the back of the cage when she took on Avon Grove’s goalie in a 1 v 1 play. Avon Grove answered with a goal by Maddie Register two minutes later. In the second half, Avon Grove had the chance to tie the game when a penalty stroke was called against Kennett; however, Villanova bound Maddi Sears (six saves) made a fine save on the stroke. Kennett’s final goal from Wells solidified the Ches-Mont victory for Kennett.

Chestnut Hill 5, Lincoln University 0 >> The Lions put together one of their best outings this season, but a 15-minute stretch in the first half was their ultimate undoing Thursday in non-conference action at the LU Athletics Stadium. Chestnut Hill scored four its five markers during that fateful 15 minutes. Freshman goalie Ida Rose Moore, in her first game of the season, finished with 11 saves on 16 shots.
