Week Seven brings big game in Ches-Mont National Division

Week seven is here and the schedule brings up many interesting games including a big one in the Ches-Mont National Division between Downingtown West and Coatesville at Red Raider Stadium. Here is a look at that game and all the weekend action.

Downingtown West (5-1) at Coatesville (6-0), 7 p.m. Coatesville’s defense is very fast and physical and is led by Brendan Barthmaier and Francisco Hall who are the leaders of a very impressive unit. Downingtown West will challenge that defense as the Whippets are averaging 40 points per game. and have scored 104 points i their last two games.

Downingtown West quarterback Quinn Henicle has completed 33 of 48 passes on the season and was seven for eight in last week’s 49-7 win over West Chester East. Henicle has multiple threats to throw to in Dean Hangey and Jake Kucera.

Coatesville can run the football effectively with Damon Watson and Red Raider quarterback Harrison Susi is always a threat to pull the ball down and take off himself. The battle will be won up front as we will see if the huge Downingtown West offensive line can move the best front seven in the Ches-Mont League and possibly the district.

Pick: Coatesville 28, Downingtown West 24.

Academy Park (2-4) at Downingtown East (5-1), 7 p.m. Downingtown East is led by running back Bo Horvath who leads the other area rushers with 1,210 yards. Horvath rarely goes down on first contact and he is a load to bring down. Academy park is having a rare down season but the Knights feature busing back Terrance Oliver, who has over 800 yards rushing so far this season.

Pick: Downingtown East 42, Academy Park 14.

Great Valley (5-1) at WC Henderson (0-5), 7 p.m. Great Valley was knocked from the unbeaten ranks last week, dropping a 6-3 verdict to Bishop Shanahan. The Patriots could not muster any sort of a running game as the Eagles held Great Valley to just 59 yards on 22 carries. Also, the patriots receivers dropped numerous passes from junior quarterback Braeden Melia.

The Warriors are having trouble scoring points and they were shut out 22-0 at Chester last week. WC Henderson has only scored 15 points so far this season and the Warriors defense has been on the field a lot this season.

Pick: Great Valley 24, WC Henderson 14.

Unionville (4-2) at Kennett (3-3), 7 p.m. This is a bitter rivalry between the two neighboring schools and Kennett has lost two game sin a row and given up a lot of yardage in those two losses. But Kennett has Julian Sparacino who rushed for 275 yards in the Blue Demons 35-24 loss to Interboro last week. The Unionville defense completely shut down Chichester last week, allowing just a paltry 69 total awards of offense.

The question will be if the Longhorns defense can slow down Sparacino enough to get their offense on the field and let running back Joe King to do his work. king is a tough runner who can break a play at any time he is on the field.

Pick: Unionville 21, Kennett 20.

Oxford (3-3) at WC Rustin (3-2), 7 p.m. Oxford battled Downingtown East last week before dropping a 42-28 decision to the 6A Cougars. Hornets quarterback Dustin Long threw for 350 yards on the Downingtown East defense and the Golden Knights will have to put some pressure on Long to slow down the Oxford passing attack.

WC Rustin will be getting some injure players back this week and the Golden Knights will try to control the game wither patented Wing-T offense. look for Damion Jacobs to get a lot of carries in this one.

Pick: WC Rustin 28, Oxford 21.

West Chester East (0-6) at Sun Valley (2-4), 7 p.m. WC East is looking for its first win of the season and the Vikings travel to Aston to take on an improved Sun Valley squad. Look for the Vikings to get that first win as I think Mitch Ragni will have a big game running the football.

The Vikings defense gave up  403 yards of total offense last week in a 49-7 loss to Downingtown West. But Sun Valley has nowhere near the size or skill that the Whippets possess.  The Vikings can win this one if they do not turn the ball over.

Pick: WC East 23, Sun Valley 14.

Sringfield Delco (3-3) at Conestoga (5-1), 7 p.m.

Conestoga is currently fifth in the District 1 6A playoff points race and the Pioneers are playing very good football this season. Look for Jon Quici and Nate Allred to churn out the rushing yards against a good Cougars defense. Pioneer quarterback Peter Costigan will also look to move the chains with the Pioneers short passing game. Costigan was six for 10 through the air last week in a 20-7 win over Upper Darby.

Pick: Conestoga 28, Springfield 20.

Malvern Prep (4-0) at Delaware Military Academy (3-2), 7p.m. Malvern Prep  has featured a defense that is allowing just four points per game this season so far, and the friars have been getting just enough offense to stay undefeated through four games. This should be another low scoring Friars win.

Pick: Malvern Prep 14, Delaware Military Academy 6.

Saturday games

Bishop Shanahan (3-2) at Avon Grove (3-3), 1 p.m. Both teams are coming off wins here as Bishop Shanahan defeated Great Valley 6-3 while the host Red Devils knocked out Academy Park 24-6. Both teams are run dependent and the Red Devils have a pair of bruising backs in Thad Binstead and Harrison Watson, who both had over 60 yards rushing in the win over Academy Park. the Avon Grove defense has played very well the past two games.

Bishop Shanahan’s defense completely shut down Great Valley last week and lineman Luke Lorenz had a big game for the Eagles defense. On offense. Trevor Barbadora is a game breaker and Avon Grove will have to keep an eye on the speedy back.

Pick: Bishop Shanahan 21, Avon Grove 17.
