Germantown Academy runs to daylight in win over Olney Charter
WHITEMARSH >> On just the third offensive play for Germantown Academy, Tripp Capers took the handoff from quarterback Tristian Machado and whipped around the left side, dashing 37 yards for a score.
In the third quarter – on a very similar play – Capers again swept left for 77 untouched yards, breaking free for a game-breaking touchdown.
Capers would rack up 141 yards on the ground as the Patriots won 37-6 over Olney Charter to improve to 3-0.
“I have to thank my o-line and my wide receivers,” said Capers of his prolific performance. “They blocked and (running backs coach Al Picariello) has been on me about getting to the hole and hitting the hole hard.”
There were many holes pried open for the Patriots on Saturday, and GA exploited them for 192 yards. Machado threw for an additional 177 yards and three touchdowns in a robust offensive performance at Carey Stadium.
“We’re just getting started. We’re not even at full strength yet. We have a couple guys banged up. We’re gonna be so good come (the Inter-Ac portion of our schedule),” Capers said.
The Patriots added a 35-yard field goal by Cole Grim to build the lead to 10-0 at the break on this sunny afternoon on the turf.
Aaron Parks gathered in a 13-yard scoring strike from Machado to make it 17-0 in the third quarter, which grew to 24-0 when Capers broke away again.
“Tripp’s a game changer,” Patriots coach Matt Dence said. “We think he’s a Division 1 baseball player and he might be a Division 1 football player – he’s fantastic. We haven’t had too many kids with that type of speed. He’s got a different level of speed. And he’s a great kid.
“The fact that we have those guys that can get to the edge, we’re feeling pretty about it, and then we have Seamus Knox running it up inside. We like our weapons and the offensive line’s starting to gell.”
Two more scores by GA ensured a running clock in the fourth quarter.
Machado threw to Logan Woodward for a 10-yard TD and Machado lofted a 57-yard bomb to A.J. Towsen to make it 37-0.
Against the Patriots’ reserves, Olney capped the scoring on the final play of the contest, when Tymir Kane sprinted 58 yards for a touchdown to break the shutout.
GA had done a solid job of keeping Kane contained for most of the way.
“He is a heck of a player,” Dence said. “What we said was we couldn’t let them have big chunk plays, especially for scores.”
