Local Roundup: Kennett tops Oxford at Hartefeld

The Kennett boys’ golf team topped Oxford 214-236 on Monday at Hartefeld National Golf Club. Griffin Gaughan carded a 38 to capture medalist honors for the Blue Demons. Ben Fields paced Oxford with a 40. Kennett is now 4-1 in the Ches-Mont American (9-1 overall) and is tied for second place with West Chester Rustin, behind 5-1 Unionville.

Girls Soccer

West Chester Rustin 1, Bishop Shanahan 1 (2OT) >> Avery Patel scored the lone goal for the Knights early in the first half. Maddy Grigalonis scored the only goal for the Eagles midway through the second.

Villa Maria 5, Notre Dame 1 >> The Hurricanes remain unbeaten (6-0) and move to 2-0 in AACA action with the win. Kaelyn Wolfe notched two goals, and Carly Catania added a goal and two assists. The defense was led by keeper Maddie Catania and defenders Lauren Steltz, Margaret Flick, Olivia Broadhurst and Mary Gabriele.

 

Girls Tennis

West Chester Henderson 5, Pennsbury 2 >> The Warriors pulled out a non-league win by taking three of four doubles matches. Gillian Graham and Marie Logan won at No. 1, Abby Denny and Lauren Cotellesse prevailed at No. 2, and the team Madelyn Walsh and Leah Skomorucha were victorious at No. 3.

Oxford 5, Sun Valley 2 >> The Hornets’ Alexa Harris and Julia Kahn won their singles matches to power Oxford past the Vanguards. Harris and Kahn each grabbed straight set wins, and the Hornets’ No. 4 doubles team won in a three-set tiebreaker.

Football

Two Lions honored by CIAA >> A pair of Lincoln football players were honored by the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association for their in-game performances in Saturday’s win over Central State.

Freshman quarterback Isaiah Freeman, in his first collegiate start, was named CIAA Rookie of the Week, while junior Dah’Mear Triplett was named CIAA Receiver of the Week. Freeman led the team in rushing with 70 yards on 12 attempts for an average of 5.8 yards. He added 140 yards and two touchdowns.

Field Hockey

West Chester 8, New Haven 0 >> Jasmine Miller and Valerie van Kuijck each scored two goals, and goalkeeper Megan Gula (Avon Grove) registered her second straight shutout as the Golden Rams downed New Haven, 8-0, on Sunday.

Second-ranked West Chester (4-0) dominated 10th-ranked New Haven (0-3) all afternoon, outshooting the Chargers by a 50-5 margin – mainly on the strength of a 23-2 advantage in penalty corners. Van Kuijck finished the day with five points in the win. Paige Wolfe (Downingtown East) posted a goal and two assists to support offensive onslaught as well. Wolfe played a role in three of the team’s first four markers in the game. Miller’s two tallies, coupled with van Kuijck’s pair of goals, leaves the tandem tied for the team lead in that category.
