Harriton football squad following a different scheduling path

Rosemont >> The Harriton High School football squad, which went winless last year, has decided to follow a different scheduling path this fall.

The Rams, who have 43 players on their varsity squad, are playing an independent football schedule in both 2022 and 2023 that will pit them against teams that are more similar in roster size to Harriton. The Rams plan to return to a Central League football schedule in 2024.

“Building a schedule with teams similar in roster size has created a nice buzz around our program,” said Harriton head coach Justin Mellor. “If our team can learn to ‘Flip the Switch,’ we can be very competitive in all of our contests.”

The Rams will play seven games against non-Central League opponents this fall – Roxborough, Springfield Township (Montco), Pottstown, George School, New Hope-Solebury, Academy of the New Church and Lower Moreland.

Harriton’s biggest strength is its passing game, with senior quarterback Logan Rothberg (6-0, 175) throwing to senior wide receiver Matt Krebbs (5-10, 175) and sophomore tight end Colin Sullivan.

This is a versatile trio – last year, Rothberg threw for more than 1,500 yards, ran for more than 250 yards and scored eight touchdowns; Krebbs made 64 receptions, gained more than 1,200 all-purpose yards and scored 5 touchdowns; and Sullivan grabbed 23 passes for 250 yards.

“Our trinity of Rothberg-Krebbs-Sullivan makes up one of the most powerful triads in the area,” said Mellor.

All three players earned respect from Central League coaches last fall, with Krebbs receiving first team All-Central League honors at defensive back and second team recognition at receiver; Sullivan receiving second team All-Central honors at linebacker and honorable mention at tight end, and Rothberg receiving All-Central honorable mention at quarterback.

One big key to the Rams’ success this fall will be its offensive line.

“The development of our offensive line will determine the fate of our team,” said Mellor. “They are making great progress in camp and becoming a more cohesive unit.”
Another player to watch for the Rams is junior running back Benny Gutowski (5-9, 175), who is also showing promise at linebacker.

Defensively, the Rams are led up front by junior Roei Curca (5-9, 220) and senior Seth Rubin (5-9, 200). Seniors Sage Angelis (5-6, 180) and Jeremiah Patterson (5-7, 165) are two key linebackers.

The Rams will open their 2022 season Aug. 26 at home against Roxborough, with kickoff slated for 6 p.m.
