Baseball: Coatesville offense explodes in win over Bishop Shanahan

DOWNINGTOWN- Coming into Monday afternoon’s game at Bishop Shanahan, the Coatesville baseball team had won four straight games after an opening day loss to Downingtown West. But Coatesville coach Hal Ziegler was not happy with the way his Red Raiders were hitting the baseball. Well, if Monday was any indication he can put those worries aside. Coatesville banged out 12 hits and 14 runs and got a stellar five inning pitching performance from Will Dean as Coatesville downed the host Eagles, 14-4, in a six inning Ches-Mont League win.

Coatesville (5-1) broke open a tight 3-2 game by scoring eight runs on five hits in the top of the fifth inning to put the Eagles (2-2) effectively out of the game. Coatesville also got three walks in the inning and a big three run home run by Harrison Susi to put a deadlock on the game as the Red Raiders offense erupted.

“I really hope this is the start of us hitting the baseball like we did today,’ Ziegler said. “And we also mixed in a few walks in the big inning and i was happy with that. When the weather gets warm like it was today usually teams start hitting better and we hit the billiard today plus will dean threw very well for us and gave us what we needed on the mound.”

With the score 3-2 in favor of Coatesville after four innings it looked like it was going to be a tight game the whole way with the way Dean and Bishop Shanahan starter Andrew Noone were pitching.

Noone even hit a solo home run to help his cause and Dean banged out three hits himself at the plate helping his own cause. joey mozzone also banged out two RBI singles and Magnus Kreiger also had two big hits for the Red Raiders.

But Noone started the fifth by getting RJ Rickabaugh to ground out for the first out before the sky caved in for the Eagles. Alex Kuehn singled to start the rally and that was followed by a Josh Howe single to put two men on base with one out.

Dean singled to right field to load the bases and Joey Mozzone knocked in a run with a shot to right field to make it a 4-2 Coatesville lead. Bishop Shanahan coach Brian Boyko pulled the tiring Noone and in cam Eric MacCluen. But the Eagles reliever walked three straight batters that led to three more Red Raiders runs.

In came Danny Ceribelli to pitch for the Eagles and he was greeted by Jake Stewart fielders choice to plate another run and then Rickabaugh got a fastball and he launched a long two run double to the base of the left field fence.

That blast was followed by two straight RBI singles, one from Kuehn and the second RBI single from Howe and the rout was on and the Red Raiders cruised to a 14-4 six inning mercy rule win. Dean came out after the bottom of the fifth and Joe McGann finished up for the Red Raiders who won their fifth game in a row.

“We really hit the ball well today,’ Dean said. “If we get this kind of effort we are going to be a very tough team in the Ches-Mont. Today my curveball was really spinning and my changeup was good too. My catcher (Rickabaugh) did a great job framing pitches, blocking pitches and he also called a great game. It was a nice win for us today.”
