Kennedy wins twice, Springfield finishes second at Centrals Swimming
Jake Kennedy swept the sprint events as Springfield finished second at the Central League Swimming Championships at Ridley.
The sophomore won the 50 freestyle in 20.61 seconds. He was tops in the 100 free in 46.30. Ridley’s Shane Eckler was second in both events.
Kennedy led off the 200 medley relay to help the team of Michael Huegel, Jacob Johnson and Luke Kennedy finished second in 1:37.46, three seconds behind Conestoga. The same foursome finished second in the 200 free relay (1:27.40).
Johnson won the 100 butterfly in 50.31. Huegel was fourth in the 200 individual medley and third in the 500 free.
Conestoga, which went unbeaten in the dual-meet season, scored 560 points to win the boys meet, with the Cougars second (326). The Pioneers girls won with 664 points, ahead of Radnor (313) and Garnet Valley (202).
Radnor’s Rhett Cosgrove swept the distance events. He won the 200 free in 1:43.39 and claimed the 500 free in 4:36.18. Strath Haven freshman Gavin Shifflett was second in the 200 and fourth in the 500. Marple Newtown freshman Ethan D’Angelo won diving Thursday with 350.80 points.
Speaking of diving, Class 2A state champion Alexandra Pastris of Marple Newtown made it a clean sweep of diving titles by claiming her fourth, the senior scoring 469.25 points.
In a matchup of 2021 state champs, Sydney Bergstrom got the better of Katya Eruslanova in Bergstrom’s best event. The Strath Haven senior won the 500 free in 4:58.24, just ahead of the reigning Daily Times Swimmer of the Year (5:00.38). The Haverford junior got her win in the 200 IM in 2:02.96. Bergstrom was second in the 200 free.
The only other Delco win came via Radnor’s Audrey Collins, who went 55.79 in the 100 fly to beat Harriton’s Kate Levensten. Collins turned in an impressive double by finishing second in the 100 breast. Colllins helped Radnor finish second in the 200 medley and 400 free relays, along with Marina Wang (third in the 50 free and 100 free) and Avery Barber (fifth in the 50 free and 100 free).
Springfield’s Mary Kubiak was third in the 100 backstroke and fourth in the 50 free. Garnet Valley freshman Zoey Rogers finished third in the 100 fly and fourth in the 100 back.
