WEST GOSHEN >> With a run-oriented team like West Chester Rustin, you would expect double-digit, grind-it-out scoring drives, but having a game-breaker like Dayshawn Jacobs, fans have to keep their eyes on the field or they may miss a touchdown.
Jacobs ran for 279 yards and five touchdowns as the Golden Knights (5-1) rolled to a 49-14 victory over winlees West Chester East in a Ches-Mont League American Division battle Friday at Zimmerman Stadium.
“I’m used to 10, 11, 12 play drives. These three-play drives are nice,” said Rustin head coach Mike St. Clair.
The Golden Knights established the Dayshawn Jacobs Show immediately. After taking the opening kickoff, Jacobs for all of the 68 yards on the four-play march. Jacobs had runs of 10, 11, 41 and 7 for the touchdown.
The next time Rustin touched the ball, Jacobs needed even fewer plays to extend the lead. On the second play, Jacobs took a handoff from the 22, broke free thanks to a couple of shoulder shimmies and scampered 78 yards to the endzone.
“Honestly, I don’t even know,” Jacobs said when asked what he sees on a play like that. “I just react to what’s there and the people blocking in front of me make it easier to run.”
St. Clair was a little more effusive talking about his star back.
“Anytime Dayshawn gets an inch, he’s gone,” he said. “I’ve never seen a running back like him who can make something happen out of nowhere. His lateral movements are like Barry Sanders. He moves laterally as fast as he moves forward and it is very hard to stop.”
Jacobs almost had a third score of the quarter, but his 64-yard jaunt was called back due to a crackback block.
He did get a third in the second on a 20-yard run for a 20-0 advantage.
Rustin got a non-Jacobs score to cap the half as QB Ryan Freney hit Chris Yanko from nine-yards out to make it 27-0 after the break.
The Vikings (0-7) did control most of the second half, holding the ball for 10 minutes of the 12-minute third quarter, but wasn’t able to hit the scoreboard.
That drought ended on the first play of the fourth as Mitch Ragni broke free for a 28-yard run.
“The second half, we made some adjustments and moved the ball,” said East coach Scott Stephan. “Our guys played well in the second half, now we just have to string together a full 48-minute game.”
Any hope of a miracle comeback was quickly snuffed as Jacobs broke through the middle for a 55-yard score and a 34-7 lead. The Rustin fans broke into chants of “MVP, MVP,” to serenade Jacobs on the sideline.
“When I’m in the game, I don’t even really hear it,” Jacobs said of the chants. “But on the sideline, I hear it and it pumps me up.”
He later added a one-yard to plunge to cap his night. He now has 1,238 yards on the season with 16 touchdowns.
Tyler Wileczek, who had four receptions on the evening, caught a 22-yarder from Ryan McIntyre for East’s final score.
Nyzir Jones scampered 32 yards late in the game for the final TD of the night.
Both teams have division clashes next week, Rustin hosts Oxford, while the Vikings travels to Sun Valley.
