Rustin runs over WC Henderson

WESTTOWN- It never is an easy endeavor to play the West Chester Rustin football team. Friday night at West Chester Rustin, West Chester Henderson had the dubious task of playing the host Golden Knights after a loss to Unionville last week. The Golden Knights exploded on the visiting Warriors as West Chester Rustin racked up 381 yards rushing, 246 by Dayshawn Jacobs, and the Golden Knights rolled to a 42-14, Ches-Mont American Division win.

“The holes were really big to run through tonight,” Jacobs said. “We wanted to get out early on them and put them back a little and we were able to do just that. My offensive line did a great job and it is fun running the football through holes like that. It was a good team win for us tonight. When we got up early we really started to gain our confidence.”

Jacobs got things going for the Golden Knights (1-1), Ches-Mont American, 1-1 overall) as three minutes into the game he dashed 36 yards, breaking two or three tackles along the way for an early 7-0 Golden Knights advantage.

After the Rustin defense, which limited the Henderson (0-2, 1-2) running game to just 11 yards on the night, forced the Warriors to punt the football away. No trouble for Jacobs as he rolled 94 yards, weaving his way through Warrior defenders to score and it was an early 14-0 West Chester Rustin lead.

“Rustin did a good job and they did what they do but we have to tackle better.” West Chester Henderson head coach John Lunardi said.

But the scoring runs were not just there for Jacobs. After holding on a fourth down play deep in their own territory, the West Chester Rustin onslaught continued as the Golden Knights again marched down the field and Antonio Santangelo rushed for a scoring run of 15 yards to make it a 21-0 game. Later in the second period Santangelo went for a 13 yard scoring jaunt for a commanding 28-0 Golden Knights lead late in the second period and the Golden Knights were in complete control.

Down 28-0, West Chester Henderson went on a very nice 66 yard scoring drive with senior quarterback Eddie Smink capping off the scoring drive with a pretty 12 yard touchdown pass to Sean Himsworth with 31 seconds remains in the first half and it was a 28-7 Golden Knights lead at halftime. Smink completed six passes on the West Chester Henderson scoring drive.

After intermission the Golden Knights picked up where they left off early in the third period as Jacobs took a toss from senior quarterback Kolbe Freney and dashed 60 awards to score and the Golden Knights had a 34-7 lead after a missed extra point.

The Rustin defense was not giving the Warrior offense anything and the Golden Knights Chase Hatton recovered a West Chester Henderson fumble, one of seven Warriors fumbles on the night, deep in West Chester Henderson territory.

Two plays later Jacob Mattei rolled in from a yard out and after Mattei scored on a two point conversion try, the Golden Knights had a 42-7, lead and the running clock was on with 4:05 left in the third period. Jacobs night was over as he rushed for 246 yards on just 10 carries and scored three Golden Knights touchdowns.

“We got a little fancy last week with some jet sweeps and things,” West Chester Rustin head coach Mike St.Clair said. “Tonight, we went back to doing what we do best with belly and dive and ran right at them. This is a good group of kids that work hard and they executed very well tonight.”

The loss was the second in a row for West Chester Henderson and Lunardi says his team must get better before facing Great Valley next Friday.

“We had some positives tonight,” Lunardi said. “But we have to get better from Monday through Thursday in order to change Friday night for us.”
