Reporter/Times Herald Girls Soccer Roundup: Abington edges Upper Dublin; Blanch scores 2 in North Penn’s victory
Abington 1, Upper Dublin 0 >> Lily Gray scored off a ball sent into the 18-yard box by Maura Day as Abington earned its first win in the SOL Liberty Division matchup Thursday.
Day finished with 19 completed passes and seven shots on net while Carley Slavin had 24 complete passes for the Galloping Ghosts (1-1-0, 1-0-0 division). Mei Mei Chang had 13 completed passes and three shots on net with Gray having six complete passes and put four shots on net.
With the loss, Upper Dublin dropped to 0-1-1 (0-1-0).
North Penn 2, Central Bucks West 0 >> Lauren Blanch scored twice in the first half — Kylie Holmes with the assist on the first tally — and North Penn claimed a shutout SOL Colonial Division win.
Gwynedd Mercy 2, Nazareth Academy 2 >> Gwynedd Mercy rallied from a 2-0 halftime deficit to earn an AACA draw with visiting Nazareth Academy.
Riley Morris pulled the Monarchs (2-0-1, 0-0-1 league) to within 2-1 in the 55th minute while Keira Cassidy’s tally off a Kat Pluck assist leveled the contest in the 64th minute.
Nazareth Academy (0-0-1, 0-0-1) took a 1-0 lead on an Amanda Millevoi goal in the 17th minute then went up two while Devon Cheeseman converted a penalty kick in the 22nd minute.
Pandas goalie Grace Sullivan made 12 saves while GMA keeper Ellie Verrill had six saves.
Quakertown 2, Plymouth Whitemarsh 0 >> Quakertown scored a goal in each half to claim a SOL Liberty Division win.
Plymouth Whitemarsh sophomore goalkeeper Caitlyn Dinh had 12 saves.
Central Bucks South 3, Souderton 0 >> Visiting Central Bucks South scored all three of its goals in the first half to win the SOL Colonial Division contest.
“Alexis Stefanowicz (junior) worked throughout the match to provide energy for the team in the middle of the field and helped the Indians regain their footing to keep the second half scoreless,” Souderton coach Ian Smith said. “Abby Kolb (junior) worked tirelessly at the outside back position, turning possession into chances early on in the match, and eventually putting in a consistent shift defensively.”
Upper Moreland 1, Lower Moreland 0 >> Emma Frasca scored late in the second half while Upper Moreland goalie Natalie Walton made four saves to post a shutout as the Golden Bears began their season with an SOL Freedom win.
“This was a great competitive match — our ‘first game jitters’ showed a bit in the first half and we played a bit reactive rather than taking control,” Upper Moreland coach Lisa Benvenuto said. “The momentum of the game was back and forth for both teams, and both teams had opportunities but just did not capitalize. Lower Moreland is a young team, but they should not be taken lightly.”
Frasca’s tally came at 71:39 as Brooke Lobban’s pass through backline of Lower Moreland (0-2-0, 0-1-0 division) took a deflection off a defender and Frasca got to the ball and proceeded to put it into the back of the net.
Perk Valley 11, Norristown 0 >> Perkiomen Valley’s Kieran Cabot collected a hat trick while Nicole-Bottomlye-Lytle and Lily Tremba both had a goal and three assists in the Vikings’ PAC Liberty win over Norristown.
