Connor Toussaint, Justin Pileggi lead North Penn past Souderton
LOWER SALFORD >> When North Penn’s Justin Pileggi sunk a 12-foot putt on the ninth green Tuesday afternoon at Lederach Golf Course, he pumped his fist. He set a goal for himself to shoot under-40 every match this season and his final stroke secured a three-over 39.
Not only did the shot help Pileggi keep his personal streak alive, but, when all the score cards came in and the top five scores for North Penn and Souderton were tallied up, it helped the Knights stay perfect on the season with a 200-201 win over the Indians.
“I knew I was right around 39, 40,” Pileggi said before all foursomes finished their rounds. “I needed that par. Draining it, 12-footer on the ninth hole, makes you feel good.”
Connor Toussaint led North Penn with a one-over 37 as the team improved to 4-0 overall and 4-0 in Suburban One League Colonial Division play. The Knights went 5-5 overall and in league play in 2020.
“The older kids are really taking over,” Toussaint, who played alongside Pileggi in the first foursome, said. “Just playing to their potential so far and keeping us in it. Then I know our younger player Hayley (Ekert) is playing well. We’ve got a lot of younger players and older players playing together.”
The 37 is Toussaint’s best score of the season. After struggling in the first two matches, he’s shot under 40 both times out this week.
“I started off with a bad three-putt on the first hole,” he said. “I believe I birdied four and five, or maybe it was three and four, back-to-back to get me to one-under. Then I made another bad three-putt. I think I just hung in there today, stuck it out and played well.
“I played well last year and thought this was going to be the year, then I just came out in my first two matches I shot in the 40s, which I wasn’t happy about, but I went 39 last match and 37 today. Hopefully I’m back on track. I feel more confident in my game.”
Hayley Ekert and Quinn Marett each shot 41 for the Knights while Josh Kim, Chris LaRosa and Ryan Guinaldo tied for the final top-five spot with 42.
Aiden Scott led Souderton (1-1, 0-1 SOL Colonial) with a three-over 39. Jack Graboski and Ken Kreitz, the Indians two members of the first foursome, each shot four-over 40. Alli Engart and Charlie Arobone each shot 41 to round out the top-five scorers.
Whiteout
The North Penn golf team arrived at Lederach Golf Course wearing all-white outfits. Head coach Dominic Frassinelli said it’s something the players wanted to do and a game against their SOL Colonial rival was a good time for it to happen.
“The past couple years we’ve always wanted a whiteout,” Pileggi said, “but I don’t think we ever got it. Going into senior year we were like, ‘It’s going to happen.’ We might as well do it against Souderton – which is the school rivals… We look sleek out here.”
