Upper Dublin earns dual meet sweep of rival Plymouth Whitemarsh
WHITEMARSH >> Plymouth Whitemarsh knew what it was going up against when rival Upper Dublin came to visit on Thursday night.
And collectively, the Colonials upped their game to meet the rising tide.
“Whenever you swim Upper Dublin, you know you’re gonna have fierce competition,” PW coach Kevin Golebiewski said. “They showed up exactly the way we expected. They pulled out all their big guns in the boys meet and they stacked their lineup, and that showed that they respected our team.
“The (UD) girls team are defending state champs and maybe future state champs so we knew that we were gonna have some tough swims but we won six events tonight, which was surprising. The girls really stepped up to the challenge.”
Upper Dublin held off a tremendous effort by PW on both sides, as the Cardinals won 102.5-83.5 in the girls meet and the boys prevailed 109-61 to complete the sweep for Upper Dublin in the Suburban One League Liberty Division matchup.
Charley Tulio (50 free/100 free), Mia Ruggiero (100 fly/100 back), Grace Lynch (diving) and Nina Ruggiero (100 breast) all won events for the Colonials in thier home pool.
“I thought the kids swam really well today,” Golebiewski said.
Upper Dublin stayed on course, getting the meet started with a win in the 200-yard medley relay. A foursome of Pippin Lochstet, Erica Stelling, Hannah McKeown and Grace McManus powered to a first-place time of 1 minute, 57.28 seconds.
Molly Braun (200 free) and Emma McCarthy (200 IM) followed with victories in the next two events.
“We were all pushing it,” said McCarthy. “I’m really happy where we’re at right now.”
McCarthy later joined Anna Luciani, McManus and Amanda Kulak to win the 400 free relay and close things out, the foursome finishing in 3:55.75.
Also for the Cards, Reese Fichter outlasted everyone in the 500 free, winning in 6:01.38, and the 200 free relay team of Meghan DiMartile, Braun, Korinna Pesti and Maya Gondek helped Upper Dublin to a sweep of the relays.
“I’m hoping to make districts in the 100 breast,” McCarthy said of one of her key goals. “I made it last year and I definitely wanna make it back again.”
Connor Brennan had an outstanding meet for the Upper Dublin boys. The freestyler won the 50 and the 100, then teamed up with Jonas Andrulonis, Spencer Motelson and Ashton Portnoy to win the 400 free and cap the meet.
Upper Dublin hosts Abington Monday and PW travels to Souderton on Tuesday.
