Plymouth Whitemarsh pins down Upper Dublin
WHITEMARSH >> Going into the third period of his 145-pound match with Upper Dublin’s Gus Platt, Jared McGee was hoping to gain some bonus points for his team.
He came away with much more.
“The situation presented itself,” McGee said simply afterwards.
The junior was able to pin Platt in four minutes, 58 seconds, giving Plymouth Whitemarsh its first points of the night, down 15-6.
PW then won five of the next six bouts, including two more by pin, to pull away to a 40-30 Suburban One League Liberty Division win over the Cardinals Wednesday night.
“That was a big change,” McGee said of the 145-pound match. “And we had a couple big matches after that that helped us out. We were real flat in the beginning of the match and those matches helped us turn it around.”
With the victory, PW raised its overall record to 5-1 and is now 2-1 in the division. Upper Dublin dropped to 0-3 in the Liberty.
“I think we have a really good team,” McGee said. “I think we can make big things happen, especially with the young guys that we have on this team.
“I think we can be really good the next couple years.”
McGee turned the momentum for the Colonials and the next few bouts thrust it further in PW’s direction.
Justin Bainbridge (160) and Matt Sadel (172) both secured pins for the Colonials to even things at 18 apiece. PW then won three straight matches by forfeit to build a 36-18 lead.
Zach Gallagher’s win by fall at 106 kept the Cards alive, but Jake Williams’ major decision at 113 officially shoved this one into the win column for PW.
“I thought (Upper Dublin) came out and wrestled really well and I thought we came out flat,” Colonials coach Dan Madonna said. “We kicked it up around the middle weights.”
The Cardinals, who built a 15-0 lead by virtue of a forfeit, a pin by Tommy Clayton at 132 and a 4-0 decision by Austin Pendleton at 138, host Upper Moreland on Saturday morning.
PW got ready for a home tri-meet against Council Rock South and Central Bucks South.
“That’ll be a really good test for us to see where we’re at,” Madonna said. “Council Rock South is a really good team. There’s no weak spot in the lineup and all of our kids have to come ready to go. It’s the same thing with CB South.”
