Today at The Liacourus Center at Temple University the District 1 5A championship will be decided. The top seed in the district race, West Chester East will try to capture its first ever district championship against a Penn Wood team that is making its fifth trip to the district final, and its first since 2010. Penn Wood is coming into today’s game on a eight-game winning streak.
Here is a look at both squads:
Penn Wood (18-7): The Patriots are a very athletic team that likes to play fast. the punched their ticket to the final by defeating Academy Park 46-38, Holy Ghost Prep 69-59 and Penncrest 56-51. They are led by Shamir Baunes, who averages 14 points per game and junior Jerry Flynn, who is a good three-point scorer. The Patriots also have 6-foot-5, senior Desman Howard, who is a good inside presence. Penn Wood features man-to-man ball pressure for most of the game.
West Chester East (25-2): The Vikings blew through their first three district playoff games defeating Sun Valley 42-29, Radnor 70-48 and West Chester Rustin 50-36. West Chester East is led by 6-foot-9 Andrew Carr, who averages over 23 points per game. Tym Richardson is a threat from outside or with dribble penetration. Freshman Jack Kushner is a force on the boards and guards Kieran Hefferan and Mike Dedda can both hit the three-ball.
Pick: Carr will be a match-up problem for the Patriots although Howard is a capable defender. It just seems like the Vikings have to much firepower for Penn Wood. West Chester East 68, Penn Wood 59.
