Delco Girls Basketball Super 7: Wednesday, Jan. 15
1. Cardinal O’Hara (11-2)
The Lions saw their nine-game winning streak fall against Archbishop Wood on Tuesday night. With sophomore Sydni Scott and junior Amaris Baker playing at high levels, the Lions remain the most talented and well-rounded team in Delco, with excellent coaching to boot.
2. Archbishop Carroll (8-6)
Ignore the record because the Patriots have faced one of toughest schedules in the area. Led by senior guard Erin Sweeney and sophomore guard Grace O’Neill, Carroll is still figuring it out but they should be in good shape come playoff time. Whether they can beat Wood and/or Goretti in the Catholic League remains to be seen, but the Patriots will be a state title contender in 5A again.
3. Notre Dame (11-4)
After a couple of uneven seasons in terms of wins and losses, the Irish have been one of the county’s most consistent teams, thanks in large part to the outstanding performances of senior Allie Lynch and sophomores Maeve McErlane and Julia Dever. With that said, they look to bounce back from an ugly 30-point loss to Penn Charter Tuesday night.
4. Bonner-Prendergast (5-7)
One could argue the Pandas are ranked too high for a team sitting below .500, but take a look at the strength of schedule. Fact is, the non-public schools play the tougher opponents on a yearly basis and Prendie is never any different. They are a click away from really coming together. Sophomore sharpshooter Bridie McCann and versatile senior forward Alexis Gleason have been very impressive.
5. Episcopal Academy (7-5)
Big test for the Churchwomen this Friday against Notre Dame. Cara Harty, Raeleen Keffer-Scharpf and Amanda Purcell have led a balanced offense this season. EA is a much improved team from a season ago under longtime coach Chuck Simmonds.
6. Springfield (8-4)
The Cougars made a statement with a convincing win at Ridley last Saturday. They are the clear favorite in the Central League. Junior guard Alexa Abbonizio has been tremendous.
7. Ridley (12-2)
Their 10-game winning streak came to an end against Springfield, but the Green Raiders remain one of the top teams in Delco (don’t count them out in the Central League, either. A rematch with Springfield should be very fun). They’re only getting better, with senior guard Dakota Mccaughan, and juniors Shannen Hinchey and Lindsay Boyd showing the way.
