Pennridge shuts down Council Rock South
EAST ROCKHILL >> Pennridge is sticking to its New Year’s resolution.
“No baseline,” said the Rams’ Sophie Cweiber, speaking of the defensive focus. “We had been struggling with that a little bit but we’re picking it up.
“Also, we were covering on the shooters (Saturday), and they had a big girl so we were working on help defense on her.”
Pennridge cut off just about every path to the basket and limited Council Rock South’s offense all afternoon, pulling away to a satisfying 43-22 win in a Suburban One League non-conference game.
“We won (Friday) too (over Central Bucks South) so we were excited to play again,” said Cweiber, who had a strong game defensively and led the way with a game-high 11 points. “(Rock South) was a tough team. They played well together, but we pulled through and got the ‘W.'”
The victory raised Pennridge’s overall record to 7-3. Friday’s win over the Titans has the Rams at 2-1 in the SOL Continental. Pennridge is finding its way.
“It feels good,” Cweiber said. “We’re not usually in this position so we’re excited for the rest of the season.”
Julia Kreider added nine points, and Corinn Mart, Evelyn Loughery and Jillian Coughlin contributed six each. Cweiber’s three-pointer helped kickstart the 13-5 first-quarter push.
At the other end, the Rams made it difficult for senior forward and captain Hannah Binder to find any open shots.
“Our defense is starting to get pretty solid,” Rams coach Mike Elton said. “(Rock South) is a good team to play against because they do have some shooters and they have that post player as well.
“We just keep working. It was a good, solid, all-around game. We got a win against South (on Friday) so that’s kinda new for us. I think we’re where we wanna be. We just keep focusing on the next game.”
