Main Line roundup: Local wrestlers shine at Radnor tourney, Beast of the East

Lower Merion 145-pounder Christian Hodges was named the Radnor Holiday Wrestling Tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler Dec. 21, earning four pins and going 5-0 on the day, winning the 145-pound title. He also picked up his 100th career win, the first Lower Merion wrestler to do so since Marcus Neafsey in 2008. Lower Merion, which finished fifth in the team standings, had four invididual champions at the tourney – Hodges, Jack Lledo at 138, Jakob Segal at 152 and James Lledo at 170.
Malvern Prep placed third out of 134 teams at the Beast of the East tournament at the University of Delaware Dec. 21. Dalton Harkins (152 pounds) and Nick Feldman (195) won individual titles. Harkins, fresh off a championship at the Walsh Ironman tournament a week ago, defeated Bethlehem Catholic’s Cole Handlovic, 5-1, in the tiebreaker period in the finals.
Feldman, who got by Downingtown West’s Max Hale, 5-2, in the quarterfinals, beat Blair Academy’s Peyton Craft, 7-3, in the finals. Hale went on to finish sixth, while fellow Whippets, Dom Findora (106) and Chase Mielnik (220) were eliminated in the blood round. West finished 43rd in the team standards.
Also placing for the Friars were Tommy Link (eighth at 106), Caden Rogers (eighth at 170) and Cole Deery (third at 285).
Episcopal Academy finished second in the team standings at the Radnor Holiday Wrestling Tournament half a point to team champion Plymouth Whitemarsh. EA’s Flynn Kearney finished first at 126 pounds, claiming a 10-8 victory over Penn Charter’s Jess Anderson in the championship final.
Radnor finished third at the Radnor Holiday Tournament, as the Raiders’ Bobby Hydrisko (170) finished second.

Boys’ basketball
Archbishop Carroll defeated West Catholic, 63-60, Dec. 17. Tairi Ketner had a team-high 17 points and John Camden had 12 points including a pair of treys. Dean Coleman-Newsome also had 12 points, and Anquan Hill added 11 points for the undefeated Patriots (4-0, 1-0).
Devon Prep defeated Father Judge, 60-46, Dec. 20. The Tide, who outscored Judge 19-4 in the second quarter, got 16 points each from Chris Patton and Lucas Orchard. Teammate Eamon Walsh chipped in with 10 points.
Episcopal Academy defeated Western Reserve Academy (Ohio), 87-73, Dec. 21 in the third round of the Mercer Invitational Tournament at the Hill School. Alex Capitano scored 40 points (including six treys) for the Churchmen, while teammate Sam Malloy chipped in with 19.
EA lost to Princeton Day School, 71-54, Dec. 20 in the second round of the Mercer Invitational Tournament at The Hill School. Alex Capitano led the Churchmen with 12 points, and both Malcolm Folk and Will Delaney chipped in with nine points.
The Churchmen lost to Peedie School, 72-62, Dec. 19 in the first round of the Hill School Mercer Invitational Tournament. For EA, Alex Capitano tallied 33 points, including a trio of treys.
Friends’ Central defeated Penn Charter, 58-54, Dec. 19. Mason Mosley, Ed Holland and Shawn Simmons finished with 18 points, 16 points and 12 points, respectively. With the Phoenix trailing by one point with 1:12 remaining, Ben Satz hit a driving lay-up which gave his team the lead for good.
Harriton lost to Penncrest, 47-30, Dec. 19. Markus Bradley-Lowry led the Rams with 11 points and Daniel Katz had six.
Haverford School defeated George School, 54-45, Dec. 17. Tyler Seward had a season-high 24 points, including 13 in the second half, and Matt McKenna chipped in eight as the Fords (5-2) took an eight-point advantage into the locker room at halftime and never gave up the lead.
Malvern Prep defeated Unionville, 81-44, Dec. 21. Deuce Turner led the way for the Friars with 30 points, and teammate Rahdir Hicks chipped in with 20. Spencer Cochran tallied 13 points for Malvern.
The Friars defeated Pennington School, 94-67, Dec. 19. For the Friars, Deuce Turner scored 27 points, and four teammates scored in double figures – Spencer Cochran (13 points), Rahdir Hicks (11), Lonnie White (10) and Blaise Bekkedam (10).
The Friars defeated St. Joe’s Prep, 79-52, Dec. 19. For the Friars, Spencer Cochran scored 19 points, Deuce Turner tallied 16 and Rahdir Hicks scored 16. Fran Oschell chipped in with nine.
Radnor defeated Marple Newtown, 43-32, Dec. 19. Jaamir Stewart had 21 points and three steals and Jack d’Entremont chipped in seven points and four rebounds as the Raiders continued their strong start to the season. Lew Robinson added five points, six boards and a block for Radnor.
Girls’ basketball
Academy of Notre Dame lost to Villa Maria Academy, 59-37, Dec. 21. Maeve McErlane led the Irish with 11 points.
Archbishop Carroll lost to West Catholic in overtime, 57-51, Dec. 17. The Patriots were playing without guard Erin Sweeney for a third straight game. WC scored all six points in the extra session. Taylor Wilson led three Carroll players in double figures with 16 points to go with six rebounds. Grace O’Neill tossed in 14 points, while Maggie Grant added 10. Karli Dougherty paired nine points with seven rebounds.
Episcopal Academy defeated Hill School, 43-32, Dec. 19. Raeleen Keffer-Scharpf paced the Churchwomen (2-4) to their second straight win, scoring a team-high 16 points. Amanda Purcell and Gaeli Keffer-Scharpf tossed in nine points apiece.
Haverford High defeated Upper Darby, 57-31, Chiara MacGillivray and Caroline Dotsey paced the Fords with 14 points each and combined for 17 of Haverford’s 21 points in the third quarter, when the Fords outscored the Royals, 21-7.
Radnor defeated Harriton, 57-47, Dec. 17. The Raiders got a boost from reserve players Sally Austen and Margaret Mooney. Austen came off the bench for seven straight points in the first quarter on the way to career-high nine points. Mooney added eight points to give the Raiders the lead for good. Ellie Mueller totaled 11 points, six assists and five steals for Radnor. Brienne Williams contributed 10 points and four steals.
Sacred Heart lost to Academy Park, 38-32, Dec. 19. Carina Fichera paced Sacred Heart with 11 points.
Villa Maria Academy lost to Mount St. Joseph, 69-59, Dec. 19. Maddy Ryan tallied 19 points for the Hurricanes, and Morgan Warley chipped in with 12.
The Hurricanes defeated Villa Joseph Marie, 54-42, Dec. 17. The Huuricanes, who outscored VJM in the second quarter 21-8, got 13 points each from Maddy Ryan and Faith Iacone. Carina Chieffalo chipped in with nine points.
Indoor track
Haverford School sprinters shone at the Track and Field Coaches Association of Greater Philadelphia Meet No. 2 at Lehigh Dec. 21. Daiyaan Hawkins and Kevin Thomas dominated the 60-meter dash and hurdles, respectively. Hawkins was first in the Division II dash, his time of 6.94 easily besting the field and qualifying for the state meet. In the hurdles, Thomas dashed away from the field by three tenths in 8.25 seconds, a states time.
Radnor (girls) had a couple of second-place finishes at the Ursinus College Holiday Invitational Dec. 21. Lucy Henkle ran a personal best time of 2:25.7 in the 800 meter run. Keara Seasholtz clocked 60.85 in a close 400 meter race.
Boys’ swimming
Episcopal Academy defeated Germantown Academy, 100-84, Dec. 17. Jack Christian swam to first-place finishes in the 50 free and 100 back for the Churchmen. Ben Wesley was a double-winner in the 200 IM and 100 free. Others winners for EA included Will Hopkins (diving) and Cole Whitsett (100 fly).
Girls’ swimming
Episcopal Academy defeated Germantown Academy, 109-75, Dec. 17. Riley Pujadas claimed first place in the 200 IM and 100 back to help the Churchwomen past the Patriots. Emma Lunn (200 free), Kat Harrar (diving), Chelsey Liu (100 fly) and Jovanna Sekulic (100 breast) all won one event.
