Shipley’s Sabrina Imes is Main Line Girls Athlete of the Week

Sabrina Imes

In the Shipley’s School’s first-ever indoor track meet, the Gator sophomore not only won the 55 meter dash and the long jump in the tri-meet against Hill School and Peddie School, but landed the No. 1 spot in the state (for the winter indoor track 2019-2020 season) in the long jump and set a personal best of 18 feet 6 1/2 inches.

Q: Tell us about your long jump in the tri-meet against Hill School and the Peddie School – what is your most vivid memory of that jump? What was the key to your success in that jump?

A: My most vivid memory is that the official said what the mark was, and I heard everyone get excited. My team started to run over and tell me, “Good job!” I was also very happy because I’ve been trying to jump over 18 feet since this summer. To come out and jump that the first indoor meet was incredible. The key to my success in my jump was to keep listening to Coach [Antonio] Davis. He would record my jumps and show them to me after. He used the videos to show me how to make my jumps better so I could go farther, which I did.

Q: Tell us a little about your start in indoor track – when did you first start competing in the long jump, and the 55-meter race? Who have been your biggest mentors in indoor track, and what was the most important thing each of them taught you?

A: I started doing track when I was around 8 years old. One of my biggest mentors is my dad. He can talk to me for hours about life and track. One of my most recent mentors is Coach Davis because he used to do the events that I do in track. The lectures that he gives us during practice are very inspirational.

Q: What did it mean to you to compete in Shipley’s first-ever indoor track meet?

A: To compete in Shipley’s first-ever indoor track meet meant a lot because I never thought that Shipley would ever have a track team. I was really excited to see other people join the team and also be excited about my passion.

Q: Tell us a little about your pre-meet preparation the day of a meet.

A: On my way to track meets, I like to listen to music that will pump me up. Once I get to the meet, I always make sure that I do all of my drills and stretches so I will be really loose.

Q: What is your favorite academic course at Shipley? What do you think you might like to major in at college? Is there a career path that particularly interests you at the present time?

A: My favorite course at Shipley is chemistry. I like it because the teacher makes the course fun and easy to learn. In college, I might want to major in early childhood education because I would like to work with children and I feel like they would make my job fun.
