Fourth-quarter magic pushes Lansdale Catholic past Pennridge
EAST ROCKHILL >> Trailing by nine points at the half and down six entering the fourth quarter, Lansdale Catholic came up with an inspired performance.
“This was about a team that realized one of their sisters was on the bench and couldn’t play,” Crusaders coach Eric Gidney said, speaking of center Caitlin Rosenberger, who is out for the season with a torn ACL, “and that we should never take one minute that we’re on the court for granted. I think the team finally realized that in the last eight minutes.
“I really think it was just effort in that fourth quarter.”
Lansdale Catholic scored 25 points in that decisive fourth quarter, battling its way to a 70-65 victory over Pennridge in a non-league contest Wednesday night.
“We were very determined and we never gave up,” said the Crusaders’ Timaya Lewis-Eutsey, who poured in a game-high 29 points.
Lansdale Catholic overcame a three-point barrage by the Rams to come out on top. Pennridge connected 11 times from deep, including four from Evelyn Loughery.
Loughery’s final three pointer deadlocked things at 65 apiece with 1 minute, 1 second to play.
The Crusaders went to work, passing it around and working down the clock until Lewis-Eutsey drove hard to the hoop, layed it up and in and was fouled. She completed the three-point play to give the Crusaders a 68-65 lead with 25 seconds to go.
The Rams turned it over on their next possession, and Gabby Casey’s layup locked it up for the Crusaders (2-1).
“It was a really good win,” Lewis-Eutsey said. “We’re gonna take this with us and use it.”
The Crusaders also got 17 points from Riley DeVitis, who scored eight points in the third to help bring LC closer.
Lewis-Eutsey had 18 points in the second half to power the comeback.
“She had some key assists and some really pivotal rebounds,” Gidney said. “What she also recognized, especially in that fourth quarter, is that teams are gonna key on her, so her other teammates are gonna be open, and she did a good job of spreading the ball.”
