Mount Saint Joseph tops Gwynedd Mercy in OT, punches ticket to states

LOWER GWYNEDD >> Megan Maransky scored with 2:44 remaining in overtime to give No. 7 Mount Saint Joseph Academy a 2-1 win over No. 4 Gwynedd Mercy Academy Friday afternoon.

The win gives the Magic fifth place in District 1-2A and a spot in the state tournament.

“It’s amazing,” Maransky said. “It’s all we wanted from this game. It feels amazing.”

Maransky’s game-winner was her second goal of the game.

“I’ve been in that situation before,” she said. “As soon as I saw Rory (Williamson) get it I knew what I needed to do. I just tried to help my team the best I could.”

Maransky received a pass from Williamson and carried the ball up the right side and shot high over GMA’s goalie and into the back of the cage.

GMA scored the game’s first goal in the middle of the first half. Ireland McDermott inserted a penalty corner and went to the front of the net. There, she tipped a shot by Morgan McMenamen into the goal.

Maransky tied the game at one early in the second half. Less than two minutes after the break, Maransky and Williamson performed a give-and-go on a corner that ended with Maransky scoring.

“Coming out on fire,” Maransky said. “We knew (GMA) was going to be hyped up coming out of halftime and we just knew we had to keep them in check, keep their enthusiasm in check, and get the game tied.”

Both goalies made outstanding saves to keep it a 1-1 game for so long. The Mount’s Alyssa Brachelli made 14 saves and GMA’s Kylie Haberstrath stopped five shots.
